The San Francisco Police held a press conference regarding the attack on Paul Pelosi in his home early Friday morning at 2:27 a.m.

They said that when they arrived, Paul Pelosi had the hammer and that the attacker grabbed it from Pelosi and beat him with it.

They identified the attacker as David Depape. The police said he would face charges including attempted murder and elder abuse.

They refused to comment on security or how he got in.

According to other reports, the attacker entered the house through a sliding door and asked, “Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?” But the police did not confirm that.

Paul Pelosi suffered blunt force trauma to the head, according to news reports.

According to reports, Depape is from Berkeley — not exactly known for people on the right.

A local news columnist posted this about Depape:

My sources also name the suspect in this morning's hammer attack on Paul Pelosi as David DePape, born 1980, of Berkeley.

He would appear to be a former Castro nudist protester.

Things appear set to be bizarre for a while.

He was also identified in another article, with his name spelled wrong, as a “hemp jewelry maker.”

As we noted, where Pelosi lives is well-known and there have been frequent protests at her home in the past. The attack has been condemned on all sides, including by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).

Attorney Harmeet Dhillon had the same question I had about security. While the Speaker has her own security detail with her in D.C., what happened to the other security that is normally monitoring the house? If they were there, how could someone get in?

My firm served a lawsuit against Paul Pelosi one time in SF after attempting to serve at other residences—Napa, Georgetown. They weren’t home, but staff were, & multiple law enforcement officers were on the perimeter. Break-in is odd given this level of security.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) denounced the attack, and wished Paul Pelosi well while also noting that when he was attacked, Christine Pelosi, the daughter of Paul and Nancy Pelosi, tweeted “Rand Paul’s neighbor was right.”

Paul’s neighbor attacked him, breaking several of his ribs and he had to have part of a lung removed as a result.
