It’s not a good thing to have to watch Joe Biden being incoherent on the world stage.
As I wrote yesterday, Biden was three hours late for his NATO press conference yesterday, keeping 100 members of the press waiting. Then when he finally showed up, he only spoke for about twenty minutes and only took five questions from pre-selected reporters.
When asked about Putin, he seemed unable to respond at first, looking like he was listening intently for an answer to help him or trying to remember an answer he’d been drilled on. But either way, it was embarrassing and concerning.

It was bad not only because of the incoherence and what the whole world must have thought of that, but also because that was the moment he should have been calling out Vladimir Putin and going all-in on the pressure. Yet at that moment, he even backed off any criticism, he refused to repeat what he previously said and he even said, “I don’t think it matters a whole lot in terms of this next meeting we’re about to have,” when calling him out is indeed supposed to be one of the main points of the meeting, to push Putin on things like the cyberattacks on critical industries that have been linked to Russian cybercriminals, among other issues.
He then went on to actually praise Putin, calling him “bright, tough,” and a “worthy adversary.”

But instead of pressing Putin, Biden continues to appear lost and incoherent. Take his remarks today at the EU-US Summit. This video is hard to understand and not just because the video feed is a little faint, but because Joe is being Joe and it’s hard to decipher what he’s actually saying. But once again, the man who is supposed to be the most powerful man in the world mumbles, seems to lose track of what he’s trying to say mid-sentence, looks down for it in the notes, and despairs that he’s “going to get into trouble” for leaving out people’s names.

But you can see Blinken looking intently at him as he’s talking, looking like he’s thinking “let him get through it,” while the woman on his left is taking the opposite tack, more a “don’t look, don’t look, maybe if I don’t look at him, no one will notice his problems” approach.
We’re in a very dangerous position with this, and we haven’t even gotten to the Putin meeting yet.
