One of the reasons that Democrats were desperate to try to impeach and convict President Donald Trump again, even though it was likely unconstitutional was because they wanted to foreclose Trump from any future run for the White House in 2024. It was that simple. This was a complete manipulation of the purpose of impeachment which was supposed to be about removal, not sating your desire to do in your political opponent without any evidence and a base false claim.
But the president may have figured out a work-around both the Democrats and the Republicans. In Trump’s farewell speech he said, “We will be back in some form, so have a good life. We will see you soon.”
According to Express U.K. and the Wall St. Journal, one thing Trump might be talking about is that he has held discussions about starting a new party, which would be called the “Patriot Party.”
Many are seeing it as a welcome alternative to many of his supporters who have grown tired of how Republicans refuse to stand up for the values and ideas they claim to care about. Many of his 75 million plus supporters hold a stronger feeling for him then they do for the Republican Party particularly with many of them feeling that many Republicans didn’t sufficiently support him.
Some Republicans are not fond of the idea, believing it will dilute the Republican position against Democrats and ensure Democrats be elected if there’s a third party.
But ultimately the bottom line is that the Republican Party, the base, a lot of the new members of Congress, even some of the old members of Congress were all irrevocably changed for the better by Trump. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell doesn’t run the Republican Party, Trump does, he’s the one who holds the base.
So it really comes down to a basic question. Does the Republican Party want to go down the path that McConnell seems to now be leading them down, a path where he seems to want to sweep Trump aside or do they want to actually defeat Democrats again at some point in the future?
If he doesn’t make a choice to care about the issues that the base cares about, if they allow the Democrats to steamroller them and censor questions to the Democratic narrative, then they don’t have much of a future.
We’re already seen people like McConnell and Rep. Liz Cheney not “choosing wisely.”
But however you slice it and whatever he does, Trump is still going to hold sway over the Republicans in whatever fashion he chooses. If they don’t get that, they’re in for a very rude awakening.
