There was almost a tragedy at a Defend the Police rally in Eaton, Colorado over the weekend.

We’ve seen a lot of violent encounters with BLM activists stopping cars, most of which could have been avoided if they would dispense with the notion they had the right to stop people.

But the BLM movement has stoked hatred and demonized the police. Folks on the left have never been fans of police but now we see attacks on police on the rise with even out-and-out ambushes against police.

Now there are even attacks for expressing support for police.

In this case, it appears that this was an attempt to run people over.

The rally was organized by Northern Colorado Young Republicans and they were gathered at the Benjamin Eaton Memorial Park and the Eaton Town Square Park on Saturday. They were also on the sidewalks waving flags in support of law enforcement.

According to rally attendees, about 3:30 p.m. the SUV drove west up Collins Street, barreled over the curb, cutting across the park grass on the south side. The vehicle drove down into a lower grassy area almost hitting some rally participants before returning to the road.

Some participants at the rally said the suspect was the same individual who drove east on Collins Street before the incident while flipping off the crowd.

Going up over a curb, then driving further into the park, apparently aiming for the rally participants that he’d previously flipped off and then fleeing are all indications that this wasn’t an accident.

He then fled the scene with the cops in hot pursuit. They arrested him and charged him with seven counts of attempted first-degree assault, seven counts of felony menacing, and one count of reckless driving.

They also cited another individual for “throwing missiles.” It’s not clear if that was related.

The rally folks there made it clear threats weren’t going to stop them from supporting the police.

Connie Williams, a 20-year Eaton resident, came out to wave her American flag with red, blue and green lines representing fire and police departments as well as the military.

“We are here today because we believe our democracy is being threatened,” she explained. “And part of being in a small community is that your voice can be heard. The police, fire and military have always been there for us, so we feel we should be there for them.”

Prior to the rally, organizers hosted a food drive to benefit the Guadalupe Center. Bulldog Pub and Grub, 1815 65th Ave. in Greeley, also provided free lunch for the officers working at the station.
