Right now, it looks like Joe Biden is likely to get the nomination for the Democrats although the delegate count is close with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) with Biden at 596 and Sanders at 526. Biden will have the edge if they go to the convention with neither one having the required 1991 delegates needed.

Now one might think that the smart money would bet that his choice for a running mate if he got the nomination might be Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA).

But perhaps not so much.

Jill Biden was discussing possible Vice Presidential picks at a breakfast fundraiser in Glencoe, Illinois when she brought up how Harris had taken down Joe Biden in the Democrats’ opening debate in Miami over school busing. That helped burnish Harris’ numbers for a short period but apparently is something the Bidens haven’t forgotten.

“Our son, Beau, spoke so highly of her and, you know, and how great she was. And not that she isn’t, I’m not saying that. But it was just like a punch to the gut. It was a little unexpected,” Jill Biden dished.

That’s not sounding like she’s high on their list, although Jill Biden still included her in saying Harris, along with former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, all “would be a great pick.”

But it could be Biden goes in another direction, if what Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) said this morning is accurate.

Klobuchar was campaigning for Biden in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Saturday when she made the following comment, according to the Daily Caller.

“Bit of a Freudian slip…while stumping for @JoeBiden just now in Grand Rapids, MI @amyklobuchar says she ‘couldn’t think of a better way to end my candidacy than join the ticket…’ to big applause. She quickly corrected to say ‘join the terrific campaign of Joe Biden,’” NBC’s Amanda Golden tweeted.

The theory would be that she would help his candidacy in the general election in the midwest where he would definitely need help. That might help him more than Harris from California.

Michigan is a must win for Bernie per the media. Biden is sending Amy Klobuchar to do multiple events for him.

Given Biden’s issues, any running mate would become of critical importance.

But as we noted with Biden’s comments in regard to Pete Buttigieg and Beto O’Rourke, if he offered her the position in return for her endorsement.

18 U.S. Code § 599 is pretty clear on th “Whoever, being a candidate, directly or indirectly promises or pledges the appointment, or the use of his influence or support for the appointment of any person to any public or private position or employment, for the purpose of procuring support in his candidacy shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if the violation was willful, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.”

Even if it were Klobuchar and Biden tries to shore up his chances in the midwest, he can’t shore himself up and if he gets the nomination, he wouldn’t be able to hide from debate with the president.
