I know. The headline smacks as if it came from a satire site.
One wishes this had to be satire, or it wouldn't have been written. Not all that long ago, no one would have seriously argued that America needed more LGBTQ+ activists — much less economic professors and such. I mean, when you reach a troubling point in society where deeply disturbed people have various body parts lopped off — because they believe they were born in the "wrong body," the whole damn thing should be satire.
Yet, here we are.
According to a self-identified "cis gay man" economist and a "cis androsexual woman" economist, the field of economics needs more gay and gender-confused economists, because the economy is under assault from... wait for it... President Donald Trump.
Yep, Bard College Professor Michael Martell, who wrote a book called “Queering Economics,” and Franklin and Marshall economist Leanne Roncolato, have concluded that Trump's economic policies "discourage dissent and diversity [and] marginalize queer voices."
Uh-huh.
The duo recently explained their argument in an essay for the Bay Area Reporter:
Things won’t get better on their own and the current headwinds are strong. LGBTQ+ economists and economists committed to doing research empowering LGBTQ+ individuals are under attack. For many decades, barriers to working on LGBTQ+ economics were implicit. It has been difficult to emulate the natural sciences with scarce data on queer individuals, and grant administrators have been reluctant to fund our research.
Just as these implicit barriers were lowering, the Trump administration and its allies in power are trying to silence queer research. They are defunding our few grants and erasing us from federal data. These efforts are gathering steam. New explicit barriers are emerging every day. For example, Texas Tech recently announced a ban on researching LGBTQ+ topics throughout its ranks. The time to respond is now.

Look, we all live in the same economy (with potential differences in various areas of the country and one's financial situation), regardless of one's self-declared identity, sexual proclivities, skin color, or political predisposition.
Not so fast, declare Martell and Roncolato:
These attacks may delay the project of queering economics, but they will not derail it. The communities of economists committed to building a more inclusive, diverse, and useful discipline have already formed and are strong. Progress will not continue, however, without intention and hard work.

[S]ome of the affirming research we need will be inherently messy. The world we live in is messy. We can make sense of the messiness together, with all of us. And when the economics discipline includes everyone, our economies can promote prosperity for everyone.
OK, so I wrote this article, and even I don't get it.
The truth is the Left uses the same identity politics (regardless of who's "identifying" whom, simply by switching out one "identity" for another, as deemed appropriate), for one simple overall reason: to attract the political support of disparate factions (identities) for the purpose of patching together a viable voter base. Or something.
