Not Parody: Socialist NYC Mayoral Candidate Lectures Billionaire About How DEI Is Good for Business

As if the Democrat Party — which still hasn't recovered from the decisive beatdown it suffered at the hands of President Donald Trump in the 2024 election — wasn't already in a self-inflicted free fall, recent events have only accelerated the decline.

First, Trump's successful attack on key Iranian nuclear sites, which Democrats frantically continue to downplay (lie about), was a "yuuge," (as Trump might say) setback for the TDS-riddled among us.

Then, Zohran Mamdani, the so-called "Democratic Socialist" candidate for mayor of New York City, bested former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in Tuesday's Democrat primary. Given the demographics of NYC, Mamdani is the hands-down favorite to become the Big Apple's next mayor.

Incidentally, I wonder if Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson might soon become the second-worst mayor in America, but I digress.

Anyway, billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman is among those who fear for the future of NYC, often dubbed "the financial center of the world," given Mamdani's socialist positions. Ackman posted an extensive missive on X (formerly, Twitter) on Thursday, in which he shared his concerns about Mamdani. Ackman wrote, in part (emphasis, mine):

I awoke this morning gravely concerned about New York City. I thought “What has NYC become that an avowed socialist who has supported defunding the police, whose solution to lowering food prices is city-owned supermarkets, who doesn’t understand that freezing rents will only reduce the supply of housing, who has no experience managing an organization -- let alone a city with a $100+ billion budget and a $2 trillion economy -- and who believes chants for ‘Globalizing the Intifada’ are acceptable, wins the Democratic Primary.

After speaking with those supported @ZohranKMamdani, I believe that he won the primary largely not due to his policies, but rather because he is a superb politician who ran a remarkable and inspiring campaign. He is intelligent and articulate. He is young and charming, and he successfully played down incriminating @X posts and statements from his past, pitching a joyful campaign of unity.

Isn't that — the bolded passage — always what wins elections for Democrats? Think about it.

For example, Barack Obama soared into the presidency on January 20, 2009, after having declared at the 2004 Democratic National Convention: "There is not a liberal America and a conservative America, there is the United States of America." Yet, when Obama became president, he set about dividing America on class and racial bases for eight years — and then some.

Ackman also wrote:

The Democratic primary voter is clearly tired of the Democratic politics of the past and its aging and over-the-hill leadership – Who isn’t? [As a case in point, how embarrassing is it to watch aging Dems fall in line with their tweets of support for Mamdani, as they desperately try to defend their seats from the far left?] And therefore, without any real competition, Zohran and his attractive personal qualities and campaign skills magically make him the candidate of the future.

The problem, however, is that his policies would be disastrous for NYC. Socialism has no place in the economic capital of our country. The ability for NYC to offer services for the poor and needy, let alone the average New Yorker, is entirely dependent on NYC being a business-friendly environment and a place where wealthy residents are willing to spend 183 days and assume the associated tax burden.

You can read the rest of Ackman's post below.

What has NYC become that an avowed socialist who has supported defunding the police, whose solution to lowering food prices is city-owned supermarkets, who doesn’t understand that freezing rents will only reduce the supply of housing, who has no experience managing an organization -- let alone a city with a $100+ billion budget and a $2 trillion economy --  and who believes chants for ‘Globalizing the Intifada’ are acceptable, wins the Democratic Primary.

Surely, Ackman must be confused, right?

For example, over at CNN — the miserably failing network that laughably calls itself "the most trusted name in news" — anchor Erin Burnett trotted out Mamdani to respond to Ackman's post.

Grab the popcorn — here's the ("Democratic") Socialist's response, in part:

I’d also tell Bill Ackman that I firmly disagree with his attempt to dismantle diversity, equity and inclusion across the country. Because it’s not only against the morals of so many, it’s also against the actual bottom line for so many businesses. And as a businessman, he should understand that.

Huh?

So what's "moral" about DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion)?

Making hiring decisions based on so-called "equity" over merit? Hiring people who might be less qualified (See: Vice President Kamala Harris) based on skin color, sexual proclivities, or "gender identity," instead of the best person available for any given job?

And how does hiring people who check the "right" boxes on the equity scale help corporate America's bottom line?

Unsurprisingly, Zohran Mamdani is a product of far-left education. He attended Bowdoin College, a small liberal arts college in Maine. I ventured onto the college's website to learn a bit more about the school's philosophy and educational objectives. Here ya go:

[Bowdoin is] building a curriculum that stretches what’s expected of the liberal arts.

For us, it means working for equality, diversity, and inclusion—in our coursework, our staffing, our student body, and our financial priorities.

It means researching and protecting our environment—from the coastal ecosystems that surround and sustain us, to the humid jungles and Arctic poles that inspired some of our earliest students.

A Bowdoin education brings context, history, integrity, and empathy to the world around us.

There you have it — at least part of it, anyway.

I'll leave you with an old favorite political cartoon that perfectly sums up the left's long love affair with socialism, no matter how many times it has failed, throughout the world.

As for the NYC voters who supported Mamdani in the Tuesday primary, I'm reminded of the late comedian George Carlin's admonition:

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Then again, maybe the guy above will stick the fork into the right electrical outlet, this time.

Editor's Note: Donald Trump and his team have been fighting against the left’s extreme agenda.
