San Francisco Schools Scrap 'Grading for Equity' Plan One Day After Announcing It

Just one day after San Francisco Public Schools Superintendent Maria Su announced implementation of a sweeping change to the school system's grading system that would have replaced traditional methods of grading that would have allowed students to pass with scores as low as 41 percent, and retake final exams as many times as necessary to pass, the school system announced late Wednesday that it would scrap the idiotic plan, as widespread pressure from students, parents, educators, and the general public intensified.

Let's just call it "justified humiliation" of an out-of-control left-wing public schools superintendent who announced her misguided plan without as much as a vote by the city's school board.

The insane "Grading for Equity" plan, part of a larger and even more insane scheme, represents yet another example of "the soft bigotry of low expectations," and in some cases, "the soft racism of low expectations."

Shocking, huh?

San Francisco’s education czar found herself compelled to furiously backpedal on her "visionary" [ahem] initiative to lower academic standards, all in the noble pursuit of “equity" over merit.”

Apparently, the idea of making passing grades virtually impossible to fail to achieve (no pun intended) didn't win universal acclaim — even in San Francisco, no less. Why, who could have predicted that?

Here's just a snippet of what Ms. Su attempted to "sneak in" to her school system's grading plan, as reported by The Voice of San Francisco:

Grading for Equity eliminates homework or weekly tests from being counted in a student’s final semester grade. All that matters is how the student scores on a final examination, which can be taken multiple times.

Students can be late turning in an assignment or showing up to class or not showing up at all without it affecting their academic grade. Currently, a student needs a 90 for an A and at least 61 for a D.

Under the San Leandro Unified School District’s grading for equity system touted by the San Francisco Unified School District and its consultant, a student with a score as low as 80 can attain an A and as low as 21 can pass with a D.

If the above doesn't scream "caring for the well-being of students," what does? I mean, in the collective minds of the left.

Anyway, just hours after announcing the soon-to-be-doomed plan, Su was forced to say in a statement (emphasis, mine):

At the May 27 Board of Education meeting, we presented a proposal for a professional development opportunity in standards-based grading. There was no action taken at the meeting. No changes to grading practices have been adopted by the district or Board of Education.

We hold every SFUSD student to high standards, and our goal is to support student success by prioritizing learning and mastery. It’s clear there are a lot of questions, concerns, and misinformation with this proposal.

We want to make sure any changes benefit our students. I have decided not to pursue this strategy for next year to ensure we have time to meaningfully engage the community.

Right now we need to continue to focus on balancing our budget, stabilizing the district, and rebuilding trust.

Seriously?

Half or more of Su's nonsensical mea culpa was worthy of stand-up comedy — particularly the part about "holding every SFUSD student to high standards."

Oh, and here's a prediction, Ms. Su:

You can wait until next year or until the proverbial cows come home to "meaningfully engage the community," but judging from the size and intensity of the public outcry against your ridiculous and potentially disastrous plan, it's not going to happen.

Venture capitalist Garry Tan, a Democrat, was among those who blasted the now-scuttled plan:

San Francisco schools is trying its absolute hardest to make sure all middle income families who could move out of the city do so right away. This is, on its face, absolutely retarded. It's also a case that it comes from the preeminent tech capital of the world. This will, however, be very good for housing prices surrounding SF.

Lemme just make one addition to Tan's correct comments.

While San Francisco might very well be the preeminent tech capital of the world, the City by the Bay is also run by far-left Democrats, which should tell you all you need to know.

The Democrat Party has never been less popular as voters reject their globalist agenda.
