Former President Donald Trump says he has made a decision about running for President in 2024; the announcement of the decision will be at a later date.

Trump told New York magazine that the “big decision” is whether to announce before or after November’s midterm elections.

“Well, in my own mind, I’ve already made that decision, so nothing factors in anymore. In my own mind, I’ve already made that decision … Do I go before or after? That will be my big decision.”

Trump added that most of the people vying for a 2024 run have no chance in the primary, according to the polls.

“Let people know. I think a lot of people would not even run if I did that because, if you look at the polls, they don’t even register. Most of these people … And I think that you would actually have a backlash against them if they ran. People want me to run.”

Trump also said he is not worried about other 2024 GOP candidates and does not consider Florida Governor Ron DeSantis a rival.

Although polls have shown DeSantis winning in states like New Hampshire and Florida, overall, Trump seems to have the edge in the primaries. One (unscientific) Twitter poll in April had DeSantis with 70.7 percent of the vote and Trump with 29.3 percent of the vote; a total of 172,815 people voted.

Some conservatives and Republicans favor DeSantis over Trump. They believe that DeSantis could run America the way he has governed in Florida and, at the same time, win in key swing states while winning over independents, conservative Democrats, liberal Republicans, and Hispanic voters. The polls have been wrong before, so it could be a close race if DeSantis and Trump both run in the 2024 GOP primary.

As we reported earlier this week, a GOP operative predicted Trump would announce his run early to prevent a DeSantis run in 2024. It’s worth noting that Trump has yet to endorse DeSantis for the Governor’s race in the midterm election, and DeSantis has declined to ask for Trump’s endorsement, so that could be something to watch as the 2024 GOP primary nears.

There have been other candidates mentioned as well, such as former Vice President Mike Pence, Senator Tom Cotton (R-AK), Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), former South Carolina Governor and United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, seem to have intentions of running for President in 2024; they have all made trips to what’s traditionally the first primary state, Iowa.

There have also been whispers about Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin potentially entering the race. Some reports says GOP donors and insiders are favoring DeSantis in a 2024 White House bid, although DeSantis has continuously said he is focusing on his 2022 gubernatorial race.

It remains to be seen how the field will shape up–if Trump announces his run before the other candidates, and if some candidates hesitate to enter the race if Trump decides to run. All of that will be clear once the November midterms are over.
