Even as Democrats claim to lead the charge for more Black representation in public life and Black lives in general, a Democrat lawyer in New Jersey has filed to have Kanye West’s name removed from the presidential ballot in November.
Politico reports that Scott Salmon, a former Democrat candidate for Congress, filed the complaint in response to what he sees as problematic signatory gathering on West’s behalf.
Scott Salmon, who ran for Congress in 2018, said that although West filed at least 500 signatures more than needed to get on the ballot, those signatures are “egregiously bad, almost to a degree insulting.” The signatures, he said, are missing required information and many appear to be written in the same hand.
The acclaimed entertainer and billionaire, who listed his residence as Cody, Wyo., filed 1,327 petition signatures with the state on July 27 — far more than the 800 required to get on the ballot. He was one of seven independent or third-party candidates who filed.
Many Democrat supporters view West’s presidential bid as an intentional “spoiler” to counteract Biden votes in heavily Black districts.
Will & Grace actress Debra Messing recently
found herself in hot water when she suggested that the entertainer would “take young black voters” from Biden.
Democrats spend a lot of time talking about GOP “voter suppression” when it comes to Black voters, so it’s not a particularly good look when they actively work to boot Black Americans out of participating in the democratic process.
