This year more than ever, the GOP has shown it is just as focused on things for which we shame the Left: charisma, emotion, and cult of personality. Republicans ridiculed Obama voters in 2008 for obsessions they themselves have become swept up in.
One offshoot of the Trump phenomenon has been the increased media presence of “conservatives” such as Tomi Lahren, the young, Barbie doll-type Trump cheerleader with her own show on TheBlaze. If she represents the new face of the GOP in a post-candidate Trump world, then I am glad to stand opposite her and the party. What we need after election day is reflection on what led us down the dark path of Trump, and a resolve to never go there again. Tomi is not useful to that cause.
Ms. Lahren is as much of a female FOX News anchor-in-the-making as I’ve ever seen. She has no credentials other than her looks and words Duck Dynasty stars would praise. She applied for an internship at One America News Network, but instead was immediately given her own show. After a stint there, she moved to TheBlaze to do the same thing. At 24, she is considered a force in conservative media.
But it’s all fluff.
Jamie Weinstein of The Daily Caller interviewed Tomi recently, and not only does she lack substance, but she also lacks conservatism. This is to be expected, though, for a teeny-bopper Trumpkin.
Regarding her youth and appearance, Tomi had this to say:
So yea, I’m very proud that I’m 24 and I feel sorry for those that have to look down on me because of my age and because I’m a woman and because I have blonde hair and because I have tanned skin and because I’m generally an attractive person.
Does she think the Clintons have had people killed?
You know, sometimes we look at patterns and we look at things that are happening and sometimes you can’t dismiss everything as a conspiracy. …
We just saw, what with the DNC leaks and then what happened to a person that worked for the DNC that was in charge of that?
When asked about her reading habits, she responded with the following:
I’m going to be honest with you, I’m not a reader. I don’t like to read long books. I like to read news. So I couldn’t tell you that there was a book that I read that changed my life. More so, I love to read news and I love to read commentary and I love to watch TV. I love to watch news. I’m a watcher and I’m a writer. A reader in the sense that I like to read news but I have a very short attention span, so sitting down with a book is very difficult for me.
Vapid, unserious, and immature? Definitely. Her response to social issues is even more telling:
I always say I don’t care what you do, I just don’t want to pay for it. So I describe myself as fiscally conservative socially moderate and I will stick by that.
…Abortion is not one of those issues that is most important to me. I’m not one of those pro-lifers that is so adamant in their beliefs. Socially, I am far more moderate because I don’t think it has as many implications for the average American that’s just working to stay afloat right now. So socially I am more moderate and I do think most millennials tend to be.
And why was this young woman given her own show…twice? Because Republicans act an awful lot like Democrats and award the superficial. This shouldn’t surprise us.
Especially on the issue of abortion, Tomi Lahren is an absolute embarrassment to conservatism. Need to see what she said here, too? Here it is:
Abortion is not one of those issues that is most important to me. I’m not one of those pro-lifers that is so adamant in their beliefs. Socially, I am far more moderate because I don’t think it has as many implications for the average American that’s just working to stay afloat right now.
If someone is a pro-lifer who is not “so adamant in their beliefs”, then they are not a pro-lifer. Period. The issue of life is black-and-white. If you’re truly a conservative, you must stand on the side of life and you must be vocal about that stance. This moderate cop-out that Tomi Lahren and other Millennials take to appear sympathetic to their progressive peers only shows that they lack spines. Sanctity of life is an issue at the very foundation of conservatism. You can’t build a proper worldview upon that without holding fast to a defense of life.
Andrew Breitbart said “politics is downstream of culture”. What happens in the culture around us will directly affect our politics, whether we like it or not. Existing as a superficial, Millennial fool that prefers not to take a stand on issues of importance has implications for us “average Americans”. This is the impact someone like celebrated pseudo-journalist Tomi Lahren has upon the rest of us. She was given a platform on which to express her opinions for no reason whatsoever, masquerades as a common sense conservative when she is without sense, and believes she’s fighting the good fight.
