Rob Reiner’s son, Nick Reiner, saw his high-powered defense attorney Alan Jackson make a shocking move when he dropped out of the case on Wednesday, saying little more than the fact that his team had “no choice.”
During the arraignment on Wednesday, the 32-year-old son of the famed director was supposed to enter a plea after being charged in December with two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths of his father and mother, Michele Reiner.

Instead, what happened was that Nick spoke briefly with Jackson and his team before the hearing took place in the Los Angeles Superior Court. Once it started, Jackson told Judge Theresa McGonigle that his firm had “no choice” but to withdraw. Reiner’s son was then assigned a public defender for his case.

Jackson did not provide any further information as to why his firm was exiting the case, as he is under an order not to speak about the matter. Most recently, he represented Karen Read, the Massachusetts woman who was charged in the death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe. Read was eventually found not guilty.
The New York Post reported that Reiner, who appeared in court with a shaved head and wearing a tan jumpsuit, did not enter a plea and only spoke when asked the following by the judge.
He only addressed Judge Theresa McGonigle once when asked if he agreed to a next court date of Feb. 23.
“Yeah, I agree to that,” the wayward son said.
A spokesperson for the Reiner family later released a statement to People about the move:
“They have the utmost trust in the legal process and will not comment further on matters related to the legal proceedings," the spokesperson said.

As my RedState colleague Rusty Weiss previously reported, the legendary Hollywood director Reiner and his wife were found dead in their home on December 14 with injuries consistent with stab wounds.
The report read:
It was later reported that they had their throats slit in the midst of a heated argument.
Nick was swiftly identified as a person of interest by Rob Reiner's daughter, Romy, who reportedly found her parents' bodies in a horrifying scene.
Romy, according to TMZ, told investigators that a family member "should be a suspect" because they're "dangerous."
Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced that he could possibly seek the death penalty in the case, RedState reported, but has yet to do so.
“These charges will be two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders," Hochman said at the time.
"He also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon – that being a knife,” he added. ‘These charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty."
Reiner’s son remains behind bars with no bail.
