Rare Moment of Unity Over National Guardsmembers Attacked by Afghan National

In what has unfortunately become a rare moment of unity and bipartisanship, members of the House unanimously passed a resolution honoring the two National Guard members who were shot in a terror attack in Washington, D.C., by an Afghan national right before Thanksgiving.

On Monday, Republican and Democratic representatives passed the measure honoring West Virginia guard members Spc. Sarah Beckstrom and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, by a voice vote. It was led by West Virginia’s GOP House Reps Carol Miller and Riley Moore. Beckstrom was killed in the attack, while Wolfe fought for his life and continues to recover.

“As members of the West Virginia National Guard on duty in the nation's capital, Spc. Beckstrom and Staff Sgt. Wolfe were targeted and violently assaulted with a barrage of gunfire for doing nothing less than performing their duty as a soldier and an airman," Republican Rep. Rob Wittman (VA-01), said.

"Both of them sustained severe gunshot wounds during the attack. Sadly, Spc. Beckstrom succumbed to her injuries and passed away surrounded by loved ones on Thanksgiving Day. While Staff Sgt. Wolfe remains in recovery, and we wish him speedy success in that effort to be back on his feet,” he added.

Democratic Rep. Jill Tokuda (HI-02) also commented during the measure's passage, pointing out that Beckstrom's "life was far too short.”

"Spc. Beckstrom and Staff Sgt. Wolfe represent the very best of our nation,” Tokuda said. “Young Americans driven by service, compassion, and a sense of duty. Their willingness to step forward to serve their communities and their country reflects the highest ideals of military and public service.”

On Friday, we got some truly miraculous news about Wolfe and his recovery, after being shot during the ambush attack in D.C., RedState reported.

In a press release, MedStar Washington Hospital Center said it wanted to share an “important update regarding Wolfe, provided by his neurosurgeon and his family."

Neurosurgeon Jeffrey Mai, MD, shared the following in his statement:

Sixteen days ago, Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe was airlifted to MedStar Washington Hospital Center with a critical gunshot wound to the head. Thanks to the immediate response of emergency personnel and the exceptional care provided by our trauma and neurosurgery teams, he received lifesaving treatment, including emergency surgery to control bleeding and relieve pressure on his brain.”

“Today, we are proud to share that Staff Sgt. Wolfe has made extraordinary progress,” Mai said. “He is now breathing on his own and can stand with assistance-important milestones that reflect his strength and determination. Based on these improvements, he is now ready to transition from acute care to inpatient rehabilitation as the next step in his recovery journey.”

His family also shared in the release praise for the doctors, and they called Andy's “miraculous” progress.

It read:

“We also want to thank the world for the prayers. We know and appreciate the power of prayer, and we see the result of God working with and through these amazing medical professionals. People around the world are praying for Andy, and the presence of God was evident in his room on many occasions.”

To see this kind of bipartisanship on Capitol Hill is much needed after we have witnessed so much death since Charlie Kirk’s assassination and after a deadly weekend, involving a mass shooting in Australia and a school shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island.

Could this perhaps be the start of something bigger? Perhaps a trend of lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle remembering we are all human? Praying so. It’s desperately needed.
