We live in a strange strange world
The Committee to protect journalists has named President Trump the number 1 oppressor of journalists in the world.
The Committee to Protect Journalists named President Trump as the winner of its “Overall Achievement in Undermining Global Press Freedom” award in its “Press Oppressors” awards Monday.
The committee released a list of top global press oppressors on Monday in response to Trump’s upcoming “fake news” awards, giving Trump the top honor.
“While previous U.S. presidents have each criticized the press to some degree, they have also made public commitments to uphold its essential role in democracy, at home and abroad,” the committee wrote.
“Trump, by contrast, has consistently undermined domestic news outlets and declined to publicly raise freedom of the press with repressive leaders such as Xi [Jinping], [Recep Tayyip] Erdoğan, and [Abdel Fattah al-]Sisi.”
He gets a lot done with those tiny hands. Just goes to show a little determination goes along way. I mean China has the great firewall that censors speech in real time and requires news outlets to have licenses. Turkey just well just kills journalists Erdogan doesn’t like all the while Trump hasn’t even proposed legislation against the fifth estate he just tweets mean things. What’s surprising is the Committee actually maintains a list of countries where journalists are most likely to be killed by the government
For the current edition, CPJ analysed journalist murders that took place between 1 September 2006 and 31 August, 2016. Only those nations with five or more unsolved cases for this period are included on the index — a threshold that 13 countries met this year, compared with 14 last year.
In rank order (with the numbers of unsolved murders in brackets) they are: 1. Somalia (24); 2. Iraq (71); 3. Syria (17); 4. Philippines (41); 5. South Sudan (5); 6. Mexico (21); 7. Afghanistan (5); 8. Pakistan (21); 9. Brazil (15); 10. Russia (9); 11. Bangladesh (7); 12. Nigeria (5); 13. India (13)
I suppose the fact America isn’t even on the list was why committee felt comfortable presenting their award here despite having the worlds worst oppressor of journalists ? Either that or these people being professional journalists are acquainted with uses of words the ordinary person might not be.
