Donald Trump Takes Yet Another Position on The Electoral College

Donald Trump continues to demonstrate that he has very little understanding of why the electoral college is important. He would do well to check out Andrea Ruth’s posts on the subject.

By now most have likely seen this flip flop.

You could account for that drastic reversal by considering that four years had elapsed. Maybe he learned something in the meantime. Or maybe he just prefers the system with the outcome that most benefits him—the instincts of a lifelong liberal Democrat.

I tend to think that he’s just talking out of his posterior orifice. He doesn’t really understand what he’s talking about at all. His comments to New York Times reporters today certainly haven’t changed my mind on that.

Today during his canceled then uncanceled meeting with “the failing” Times, he seemed to come down firmly on both sides of the issue.

The electoral college is “actually genius” but Trump would rather do what is not “actually genius.” That doesn’t do much to support some of his assertions about his “I.Q. being one of the highest.”

He also said something similar in his interview on 60 Minutes.

“I’m not going to change my mind just because I won,” Trump told CBS’ Lesley Stahl. “But I would rather see it where you went with simple votes. You know, you get 100 million votes and somebody else gets 90 million votes and you win.”

He seems to believe that the purpose of the Electoral College is just to get candidates to campaign where they otherwise might not. Maybe somebody like Mike Pence or Newt Gingrich can give him a remedial class on federalism before the inauguration.
