Supreme Court Justice Alito: Court Members Were 'Targets for Assassination' After Roe v. Wade Leak

Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel Alito commented on Tuesday, October 25th on the physical threats against himself and other conservative members of the Court that took place after a leaked draft of the ruling he wrote overturning Roe v. Wade went to the media in May 2022. From USA Today via Yahoo News:

Alito said the unprecedented leak of the Supreme Court’s draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade earlier this year made the right-leaning justices on the nation’s highest court “targets for assassination.”

“The leak also made those of us who were thought to be in the majority and (in) support of overruling Roe and Casey targets for assassination because it gave people a rational reason to think they could prevent that from happening by killing one of us,” he said in remarks Tuesday at the Heritage Foundation.

Alito referenced a man who made threats against Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh and was arrested outside his house in June after the draft opinion leaked. Nicholas John Roske was charged with attempted murder and pleaded not guilty.

Reuters being Reuters, the author of its story on Alito’s comments was incapable of not interjecting a flight of fantasy into the narrative:

The legitimacy of the court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, largely depends on its acceptance by the public as an institution whose actions are based on the law, not the justices’ political preferences. Polls show that the court’s public approval has reached record lows.

Actually, the court’s legitimacy depends not on its ideological majority nor public opinion but rather adherence to fīat jūstitia ruat cælum (“let justice be done though the heavens fall.”) If there is no obeisance to law, there is inevitable chaos.

Alito’s expressed views sharply contrast with recent comments by fellow Justice Elena Kagan, whose liberal views are no secret. It doesn’t help matters when the person in a black robe sitting next to you passive-aggressively undermines court authority with insinuations.

Kagan said that on the question of legitimacy, the popularity of the court’s rulings is not the issue. Instead, she added, a “court is legitimate when it’s acting like a court,” by respecting past precedents and not asserting authority to make political or policy decisions.

“When courts become extensions of the political process, when people see them as extensions of the political process, once people see them as trying just to impose personal preferences on a society, irrespective of the law, that’s when there’s a problem,” Kagan said.

One assumes that by respecting past precedents, Kagan isn’t referring to Dred Scott v. Sanford. This means “past precedents” translates into “earlier rulings I like regardless of their legal soundness,” which means you’re judging on emotions and not law, which is not precisely what the Supreme Court is supposed to be doing. But I digress.

This is the sad yet natural outgrowth of embracing feelings over facts; a view and implementation of government based on emotion and not law. The false cushion of liberal judicial decisions rooted in non-existent “rights” made out of tissue paper redress of previous generations’ grievances has led to a hard landing when law returns from situational to sacrosanct. An illustrative aside is how it seeks canonization of early pubescent or even pre-pubescent identity confusion via chemical and surgical manipulation of its offspring, a thinly disguised hatred of children for having the unmitigated gall to, by the simple measure of growing up, reminding them of their stubborn refusal to do so themselves.

The left is blind to its hypocrisy. It claims to be for humanity yet regards all holding different political views as subhumans deserving ruthless societal exclusion. The left’s deepening hysteria over the coming election is evidenced by hysterical cries that the coming red wave dooms democracy and that people concerned over inflation will enable the next Hitler. It showcases its utter detachment from reality in favor of believing perception based on self-worship and ideologically-obtained immortality in lieu of a Biblically based world and self-view of humbling oneself before God and serving His creation in love. People detached from truth, instead operating on lies about themselves and one another, disregard history and see no issue with violence, threatened or implemented, against others. They believe any lie is not a lie when it serves their purpose, namely the acquisition and consolidation of power and accompanying wealth.
