A police officer reportedly shot and killed a man on Tuesday afternoon near the area where the Republican National Convention (RNC) is taking place in downtown Milwaukee. The incident comes after a gunman attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

The incident occurred close to the security perimeter for the RNC.

Police officers from Columbus, Ohio, shot and killed a man Tuesday afternoon near 14th and Vliet streets in Milwaukee, which is about 1 mile from Fiserv Forum, the main RNC venue.

Witnesses told WISN 12 News two homeless men were fighting in King Park, and one of them pulled a knife out. The witnesses said the men were startled when so many officers responded. Witnesses say the man with the knife was fired on by numerous officers. This has not yet been confirmed by police.

Two WISN 12 News sources say five officers fired.

There is a large police presence, including the Secret Service, at the scene. Beloit police are helping to secure the park.

The area had been tightly secured by law enforcement. Over 100 officers on bicycles, horses, and on foot were present in the area.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the death of an adult male known by the nickname “Jehovah” at the scene.

Witnesses, including Christina Kugler and Mark Walker, reported seeing the shooting as Jehovah was in the street. "He lived in one of the tent encampments, was known by the nickname Jehovah and took care of a dog, a pit bull named Isis," witnesses told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The shooting sparked swift backlash from local activists and community members. “It’s really sad, it’s really tragic,” said Father Mike Bertram of Capuchin Community Services. “I hope that we can make some more communication with law enforcement to say … we’re here, we’re willing to help in any way that we can, to deescalate a situation, or to simply invite someone (to stay here).”

The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team is currently investigating the shooting.

The shooting comes in the aftermath of the attempt on Trump’s life. 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire ten minutes into the former president’s speech on Saturday, grazing his right ear before being shot to death by Secret Service agents. Unfortunately, the shooter killed one rallygoer and wounded two others before he was stopped.

The shooter’s motive has not yet been established, as the authorities are still investigating the incident. The Secret Service has fallen under scrutiny for its failure to stop Crooks from firing into the crowd despite law enforcement being warned that he was in position on the roof of a building about 130 yards away from the stage.
