Outrage Over Biden's Use of the Term 'Illegal Immigrant' Tells Us What We Need to Know About Progressives

It was a foregone conclusion that President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech would attract both praise and condemnation, depending on the side of the aisle people fell on. Democrats and high-profile leftists favored Biden’s speech, while Republicans railed against it.

However, there was at least one point of contention for those on the left. Some took issue with how the president referred to the illegal immigrant who allegedly murdered a young nursing student named Laken Riley.

RedState’s Bonchie highlighted some of the criticism, describing how progressives responded with outrage and pearl-clutching over Biden’s use of the term “illegal immigrant.”

Perhaps Rep. Chuy Garcia can explain what being an immigrant has to do with being an illegal immigrant. They are distinctly different groups, as evidenced by the addition of the word “illegal” in front of one of them. It’s like getting mad at the word “criminal” because we are all human beings. Descriptors exist to provide much-needed context, and “illegal” is a proper description of someone who breaks America’s laws to cross the border illegally.

Rep. Joaquin Castro took things further, claiming Biden’s rhetoric was “dangerous.” Given I can find no record of him ever mentioning Laken Riley’s name, I can only assume he finds accurately describing an illegal alien more harmful than that illegal alien brutally murdering an innocent young college student. Yes, Democrat priorities are really that screwed up.

Then there was Rep. Ilhan Omar, who used the same tired (and false) line that “no human being is illegal” to push back on Biden.

These are only a few of the instances in which progressives were wringing their hands at Biden’s use of the term. The discourse around his comments has not only highlighted deep-seated division on the issue of immigration and how it intersects with criminal justice, but it also reveals a darker, more disturbing reality about those who favor the type of open borders policies that have attracted the wave of asylum seekers and illegal immigrants to the southern border during Biden’s tenure in office.

At its core, the term “illegal immigrant” is a factual descriptor for those who cross into the country in violation of immigration laws. Democrats know this. But since they want as many of these folks to enter the country – legally and illegally – as possible, they seek to shame those who dare to describe the issue accurately, as it is contrary to the agenda they are pursuing. This is what prompted the outpouring of leftist rage at Biden’s speech.

However, what is truly troubling about this issue is the fact that these people are far angrier about Biden using the term “illegal immigrant” than they are about the individual who ruthlessly murdered Riley. The people complaining about this part of the president’s speech have not directed even an iota of rage against the fact that an American citizen was killed by a person who had no right to be in the country in the first place.

There is a reason for this, of course.

For those on the far left, the agenda is everything. It takes precedence even over the lives of innocent Americans. They will push their open borders beliefs even in the aftermath of a person being murdered by one of the folks Democrats want to let into the country.

For them, it doesn’t matter that Riley did not deserve to die. What matters is that everyone adheres to their bizarre nomenclature when it comes to foreigners who wish to live in America, not the life of a nursing student who fell victim to an illegal immigrant whom this government failed to stop from remaining in the country.

The bottom line is that the left’s insistence on softening the language surrounding illegal immigration belies a much deeper commitment to advocating for porous borders regardless of how it affects everyday Americans. But what is particularly infuriating about this is that if one is open borders, they can argue their position without ignoring a tragic death at the hands of an illegal alien. Yet, this reality does not matter to them. As I stated earlier, the agenda is everything.
