When Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) isn’t busy fraternizing with Chinese spies, it appears he enjoys feeding his wanderlust and appetite for the finer things at the expense of campaign donors. The lawmaker has reportedly spent considerable sums of campaign funds to travel the globe, partake of fancy dinners, spend time at luxury spas, and a host of other extracurricular activities.

Swalwell’s campaign shelled out over $2.1 million in these diversions last year, with expenses spanning from chauffeured cars to childcare. The question is: Will he face any accountability for this?

California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell's campaign spent more than $2.1 million last year, with expenses including international travel, fine dining, luxury spas, chauffeured cars, childcare and more, according to Federal Election Commission filings.

More than $430,000 of Swalwell's expenses from last year are marked as "travel," campaign records show. At least $13,000 was spent overseas, including on trips to the United Kingdom, Germany, Israel and the United Arab Emirates. Nearly $350,000 of the travel expenses were spent on entities based outside of California.

The House Ethics Manual allows campaign funds to be used on trips to "attend a campaign or political event, or to engage in other campaign activity."

Additionally, the FEC allows a member to use campaign funds to pay for travel and related expenses of his or her spouse and minor children at political events and events that the lawmaker is attending in an official capacity.

It is unclear whether Swalwell's family accompanied him on any trips, and his campaign did not respond to requests for comment.

The filings show that Swalwell also had quite a riveting time in the United Arab Emirates courtesy of his ill-advised donors.

According to its year-end filings, Swalwell's committee reported three payments for nearly $1,700 in Dubai at the five-star Burj Al Arab Hotel, considered the city's "most iconic hotel" and one of the tallest hotels in the world.

The Burj Al Arab Hotel boasts of being a "global icon of Arabian luxury." It features an array of suites starting at around $1,300 per night and has a private beach, two outdoor and indoor swimming pools, a spa, eight restaurants and two bars, among other amenities.

Adam Andrzejewski, founder of OpenTheBooks.com, told Just the News that because “campaign funds are not taxpayer dollars and donations are not tax-deductible, the best way to hold a candidate responsible is to quit donating to them."

So, if Andrzejewski is correct, Swalwell can continue living high on the hog courtesy of those he dupes into donating to his campaign with absolutely no accountability from the government. It is also worth noting that the activist media has also decided to ignore this little tidbit – I don’t need to explain why, do I?

Swalwell’s use of campaign funds illustrates just how broken and corrupt our system is. While some politicians have faced accountability for abusing campaign funds, this story should make one wonder how many others are getting away with it. Unfortunately, the lawmaker likely won’t face any consequences, given that his donors have no idea about how he is exploiting their donations for personal gain.
