Twitter CEO Elon Musk announced on Tuesday that he has fired deputy general counsel James Baker after the release of the first installment of the Twitter Files, which revealed the details behind the company’s decision to suppress the New York Post story about Hunter Biden’s laptop. Musk’s move comes after it was revealed that Baker played a critical role in that decision.
Musk announced the development in a tweet:
In light of concerns about Baker’s possible role in suppression of information important to the public dialogue, he was exited from Twitter today

When a user asked if Baker was given the chance to explain his actions, the CEO responded, saying that his explanation was “unconvincing.”
Yes. His explanation was …unconvincing.

Journalist Matt Taibbi on Friday published a Twitter thread laying out the behind-the-scenes machinations that led to the suppression of the Hunter Biden story. He published an email from Baker pushing the false narrative that censoring the report was justified under the company’s “hacked materials” policy.
“I support the conclusion that we need more facts to assess whether the materials were hacked. At this stage, however, it is reasonable for us to assume that they may have been and that caution is warranted,” he wrote.
“There are some facts that indicate the materials may have been hacked, while there are others indicating that the computer was either abandoned and-or the owner consented to allow the repair shop to access it for at least some purposes,” Baker continued. “We simply need more information.”

Before landing at Twitter, Baker served as the FBI’s General Counsel, who was part of the effort to obtain faulty FISA warrants to surveil former Trump campaign aide Carter Page. This was used as a pretext to spy on former President Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, which resulted in the Russiagate scandal.
This development is the latest element of the fallout coming from Taibbi’s revelations about Twitter’s politically-motivated censorship efforts to influence the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. It is also part of Musk’s ongoing effort to clean up the bias inherent in the company’s culture.
There can be no doubt this move will enrage the left even further. The activist media, which has been trying desperately to downplay the significance of the Twitter Files, will likely spin this development in its attempt to undermine the new CEO. But it is clear that this is yet another part of the puzzle when it comes to understanding how deeply the rot runs in the social media company.
