I’ve always said that progressive ideology is one of the most dangerous belief systems in America – especially for racial minorities. This story is example #4,987,234 illustrating why this is the case. A public high school in Denver came under fire after it reportedly showed a video to students telling them not to contact law enforcement if they witness a racially-motivated hate crime.
The video, titled “Don’t be a Bystander: 6 Tips for Responding to Racist Attacks,” was published about five years ago on YouTube by the Barnard Center for Research on Women. It provides advice on how one should react after witnessing a racially-motivated violent crime.
In the video, the narrator starts by claiming that “in our current political moment, white supremacists and white nationalist have been emboldened, and as a result, public attacks are on the rise.” She then suggests that viewers take a series of actions to comfort and support the victim. But when she gets to the fourth tip, she says:
Because police have been trained to see people of color, gender-nonconforming folks, and Muslims as criminals, they often treat victims as perpetrators of violence. So, if the victim hasn’t asked you to call the police, do not — I repeat, do not — call the police.
One of the students who viewed the video said that “at some points it was pretty informative,” but at other points, “it was kind of, like, awkward to talk about” according to CBS News. “It felt a little uncomfortable.”
Naturally, after receiving a fierce backlash, the school went into damage control mode. It said the video “was not fully vetted” before being shown to the entire student body. Rachel Goss, the school’s principal, wrote a letter to families who took issue with the showing of the video.
“I am writing this note to emphasize that the intention behind the video was to provide empowerment for people who may witness these types of attacks, not to have any sort of negative impact on the longstanding relationship between the Denver Public Schools and the Denver Police Department,” she wrote.
It is not difficult to see that people who follow this advice are only contributing to the problem – and potentially putting minorities and members of the LGBTQ community in even more danger. It is a prime example of how so-called progressive ideology hurts the people it pretends to care about the most.
As my colleague, Mike Miller, pointed out:
So because “white supremacist violence” is on the increase (false), presumably against people of color, why would these woke, out-of-touch, left-wingers encourage bystanders not to report such attacks to the police? What— they’re afraid white police zombies are going to side with the alleged “white supremacists” and throw down against people-of-color victims?
Want to hear something sad? This is precisely what folks on the hard left would argue.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen these rocket scientists intimate that if one calls the police after a racial minority is attacked by a white person, the officer will automatically target the non-white victim. Despite the fact that this scenario is rare, they insist that this is commonplace and seek to persuade people to engage in behavior that will only place more non-whites in peril.
Moreover, the advice given in the video should not be followed regardless of the nature of the assault. If someone has been attacked, refusing to call the police so they can investigate is one of the most foolhardy courses of action one can take. Should we be expected to just let the situation stand because of some unfounded fear that a corrupt police officer will side with the assailant? Of course not.
But this video is yet another example showing that progressives care nothing for the people they claim to champion. To them, we are nothing more than pawns to be used to propagate a false narrative about widespread white supremacist violence. To put it simply, they want us scared. They seek to terrify us into supporting their braindead causes. They do not view us as human beings to be protected but as political weapons to be exploited.
