The Democratic Party stopped being pro-choice a long time ago. The days when its platform on abortion was that it should be “safe, legal, and rare” seem like they took place in the Middle Ages. Now, it no longer makes sense to call them proponents of choice.
Democrats are not pro-choice – they are pro-abortion.
On Wednesday, Senate Democrats made an ill-fated attempt to pass legislation that would have codified so-called abortion rights into federal law. The effort came more than a week after a draft Supreme Court opinion was leaked to the public. It indicated that Roe v. Wade might be seeing its last days as the law of the land. If the opinion remains the same when the ruling is issued by the end of June, states will once again be able to determine their own abortion policies.
But the bill Democrats were trying to shove through the Senate provided a look into exactly how far the party has gone when it comes to life in the womb. “The bill would have banned states from putting any restrictions on abortion, including ones that fall short of a total ban,” according to Axios, which also reported that the measure “fell 11 votes short of the 60 votes it needed to pass, as all Republicans voted against the measure, in addition to Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.).”
The bill would have allowed abortions to be performed through all nine months of pregnancy. In a statement given to The Daily Wire, Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) excoriated the proposed legislation:
Under the Democrats’ bill, a preborn child, simply for the crime of being ‘unwanted’, or ‘inconvenient’, or ‘unplanned’, could be subjected to brutal dismemberment procedures, in which the unborn child bleeds and feels excruciating pain as she dies from being pulled apart limb from limb.
The bill would have also eliminated rules mandating that a mother be provided with information regarding the development of her child in the womb. Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life, in a statement given to Axios, said “[t]he abortion zealotry of the Democrat majority in the Senate was on full display during today’s vote.”
President Joe Biden also provides a glimpse into how radical the left has become on abortion. Having been a staunch opponent of abortion in the past, he is now in line with those who believe abortion providers should be able to kill infants at any point in a woman’s pregnancy.
The Washington Times noted:
Now that the high court appears poised to overturn the landmark ruling and send the decision back to the states, according to a leak of Justice Alito’s draft of the majority decision, Mr. Biden, a practicing Roman Catholic who once said an abortion should not be solely decided by a pregnant woman, is now siding with the most liberal faction of his party, even refusing through his press secretary to oppose abortion in the ninth months of pregnancy.
The president is only one of many Democrats who have shifted on the abortion issue. Indeed, in 2022, there are scant numbers of Democrats who identify as pro-life. Yahoo’s The Week reported:
Now there is at most one maximally pro-life Democrat in each house of Congress. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W. Va) represents a state that voted for former President Donald Trump by 40 points and is its last Democratic lawmaker. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) is facing a primary challenge and intense criticism within the party. And though Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) was first elected to the House as an abortion opponent, as the Democratic nominee for Senate, he now defends late-term abortions.
In times past, Democrats were not necessarily in favor of abortion – at least not morally. However, they believed a mother should be able to choose how to handle her pregnancy, even if Democrats believed it was wrong. They felt abortions should not become commonplace nor should they be actively encouraged.
But times have changed.
Now, the Democrats have shifted from only wanting abortion to be legal to actively trying to get people to have more abortions. They want to make it as easy as possible for mothers to terminate their pregnancies. The fact that they tried to push a bill that would ease nearly all restrictions on the practice shows how far they have fallen. That they would even oppose measures requiring abortion providers to educate mothers on the development of their child or even show them a sonogram demonstrates an awful truth: These people want to see as many abortions as possible. It is not about letting a woman make an educated choice, it is about encouraging her to end her pregnancy.
This is what the pro-life movement is up against.
It is not enough for these people to want to let women make choices. They seek to persuade as many as possible to undergo the procedure. This is especially true of low-income folks and racial minorities. There is a reason why the vast majority of Planned Parenthood’s centers are located in black neighborhoods.
Overturning Roe v. Wade is a positive step. But if pro-lifers want to decrease abortions, we need more than legislation. We have to also win the messaging battle – support more viable alternatives to abortion. Conservatives have to convince mothers that there is a better way to move forward when they become pregnant. Otherwise, the pro-abortion crowd will continue facilitating the killing of children.
