Here we go again. A huge event happens that captures the attention of the nation. Then, like cockroaches, members of the progressive chattering class skitter out from their lairs to tell everyone that the real story is about racism. This is exactly what has played out since Russia decided to invade Ukraine and initiate military hostilities. The conflict is now in its second week and MSNBC media activist Joy Reid has some things to say about it.
On her show, “The ReidOut,” she made the dubious claim that people are paying attention to the Ukraine/Russia conflict because it was “white and largely Christian.” What a shocker. She started out by lamenting the fact that people have not paid as much attention to the war occurring in Yemen.
“As the world watches the devastation unfold in Ukraine, nearly 4000 miles away, another crisis is deepening that we don’t hear much about in the U.S. that is the war in Yemen,” Reid bloviated.
She continued:
“We’re seeing Ukraine is absolutely the worst humanitarian crisis that Europe has seen in decades, but we haven’t witnessed the same type of solidarity for the Yemenis as we do for the Ukrainians. We don’t see global campaigns, corporations like Airbnb and Netflix taking a stand. It’s not say we shouldn’t care this much for Ukraine, far from it. The point is, we should also care as much for Asia, Africa and Middle East too.”
But she didn’t stop there. The media activist rambled on, suggesting that nobody would be as focused if Russia invaded a nation full of black and brown people:
“Let’s face it, the world is paying attention because this is happening in Europe. If this was happening anywhere else, would we see the same outpouring of support and compassion? We don’t need to ask ourselves if the international response will be the same if Russia unleashed their horror on a country that was not white and largely Christian because Russia has already done it in Syria.
Reid concluded by pretending to take the activist media to task, noting how they do not give the same level of coverage to military confrontations involving melanated humans as they do to white folks. “This is a teachable moment for us in the media. We’re not afraid to call out our own industry. There is a lot of soul-searching that we need to do in western media about why some wars and the lives seem to matter more than others and why some refugees get a welcome mat while others get the wall,” she said.
Now then, let’s take this pile of horse excrement apart, shall we?
Firstly, Reid is correct in pointing out that the Ukraine/Russia conflict is getting far more attention than the brutality being carried out in Yemen. Indeed, it has been an ongoing conflict in which Saudi Arabia led an intervention in support of former Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi after he was ousted from his position by the Iranian-backed Houthi movement in 2015.
While news outlets have covered the increasingly bloody conflict, it has not garnered the same level of attention as what is occurring between Ukraine and Russia. But instead of taking the intellectually lazy approach and assuming it is because everyone is racist, it might make more sense to use our little grey cells to ascertain what might actually be at play here.
To put it bluntly, the situation in Ukraine is more likely to affect the United States and other western nations than what is happening in Yemen at the moment. Yes, it is a cold, hard reality, but it seems more likely that self-interest is motivating this level of attention than racial bigotry.
Russia is a major provider of oil to the U.S. and especially to Europe. Indeed, gas prices have risen dramatically over the past few days amid talk of sanctions and other actions being taken against the Russian government. Moreover, much of the reason for Russia invading Ukraine is related to the possibility that the latter might seek to become a part of NATO, which could shape the international landscape in a way that affects the West.
There is simply more at stake for the U.S. and Europe with this particular military conflict than there is with Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Yemen. If Ukraine were populated primarily by black or brown people, and the same international landscape was in place, it would be the same scenario.
But let’s go further, shall we?
What do you think would happen if war broke out between Israel and Iran tomorrow? I mean, full-on hostilities. Iran actually invades Israel and bloody skirmishes commenced. Do people like Reid actually expect us to believe our media and government would just turn a blind eye? Is she trying to convince us we’d ignore the news because it does not involve pale, blue-eyed people?
Nobody who pays attention actually believes that.
Remember when Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed radical Islamic terrorist group, started a full-on war with Israel in 2006 after it launched an attack against Israeli soldiers from Lebanon? The attack resulted in three Israeli soldiers dead and two captured. Five more were captured after a failed rescue operation. The Israeli Defense Force invaded Lebanon shortly after and hostilities lasted for over a month.
I’m old enough to recall seeing wall-to-wall news coverage of the confrontation. In the West, people pondered whether this could lead to an even bigger military confrontation with Iran that might pull in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and other Middle Eastern countries. It was certainly not ignored as Reid might suggest. Again, this type of fracas would certainly have ramifications for the United States and Europe, which is why it would receive more attention.
As usual, Reid and her ilk are simply exploiting the Ukraine/Russia conflict to further inflame racial tensions. One might ask why Reid herself has not focused much on the situation in Yemen or even other atrocities being committed in other African nations? Why did she wait until now to complain about it? Will she change up the way she reports on these stories going forward?
Of course she won’t, and we all know why.
This is just another example of a high-profile progressive using race to push their typical agenda. Unfortunately, far too many people will fall for her deception
