Bill Maher Takes a Hatchet to Cancel Culture and the Woke Olympics

Bill Maher host of HBO’s “Real Time” has weighed in on the wokeness pervading the Tokyo Summer Games. As usual, he does not hold back. But his commentary makes one wonder: How much longer will the world allow the crybullies on the left to infest its societies before pushing back?

During his latest monologue, Maher lists off a variety of different instances in which individuals were punished for behavior that occurred in the past. One example involves the opening ceremony’s former music director, who was fired the day before the Games opened because of a 1994 interview in which he admitted that he bullied other students when he was a kid.

Another example involved the Associated Press’ absurd coverage of surfing becoming an Olympic sport. The outlet argued that including surfing somehow promotes cultural appropriation and “racial indignities.” The report stated that ethnic Hawaiians “lament that surfing and their identity have been culturally appropriated by white outsiders who now stand to benefit the most from the $10 billion industry.”

But the talk show host takes it a step further, calling wokeism and cancel culture a “purge” and highlighting its authoritarian tendencies. He said:

“It’s a mentality that belongs in Stalin’s Russia. How bad does this atmosphere we are living in have to get before people who say cancel culture is overblown have to admit that it is, in fact, an insanity that is swallowing up the world.”

He continues, explaining that “my politics have not changed, but I am reacting to politics that have.”

Maher slams the idea of cultural appropriation, asking, “What is this new rule that the first to do something are the only ones who get to have it?” He argues that “not everything is about oppression.”

The comedian also takes aim at Hollywood leftists who have kowtowed to the woke crowd, which argues that actors should not play roles that do not correspond to their identity. He said:

“We live in a world where straight actors are told they can’t play gay roles and white novelists aren’t allowed to imagine what it’s like to be a Mexican immigrant. Even though trying to inhabit the life of someone else is almost the definition of empathy, the bedrock of liberalism.”

Maher is one of a small group of prominent leftists who have not sold out to the Church of Wokeism, so it is no surprise that he would be a constant critic. But, other left-leaning individuals have begun speaking out over the past few years, as the hard left has been ramping up its efforts to coerce American society to bend to its will. How long will it take before the nation finally becomes fed up with the woke crowd and cancel culture community? It’s hard to say – but one thing is clear: A reckoning is coming.
