Former Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn was one of multiple speakers who made asinine comments while speaking at a conservative conference on Saturday. At the “For God & Country Patriot Roundup,” he suggested that a coup similar to what occurred in Myanmar should happen in the United States.

At the conference, a member of the audience who identified as a “simple Marine” asked why a coup like what occurred in Myanmar could not happen here. After the crowd stopped cheering this question, Flynn responded: No reason. I mean, it should happen here.”

On February 1, Myanmar’s military overthrew its democratically elected government, arrested its leaders, and seized control of the country. Shortly after, widespread protests ensued, which prompted the military to take extreme measures to crack down on those demonstrating against the coup.

Myanmar’s Assistance Association for Political Prisoners reported that about 800 people have been killed so far. Over 4,000 citizens have been arrested. “Many of those killed have been young protesters, their lives ended with a single gunshot to the head,” according to the New York Times which also reported:

Week after week, the armed forces have escalated their attacks on the demonstrators. Including the toll from the bloodiest day of the crackdown to date, on March 27, the military has killed  more than 420 people and assaulted, detained or tortured thousands of others, according to a monitoring group.

Needless to say, Flynn, along with others who share his sentiments, seems not to care about the ramifications of a coup happening in the United States. Folks like him might think it sounds like a fun idea, but most sane Americans know it would be an utter disaster, which is why these individuals are on the fringes, where they should be.

This isn’t the first time Flynn has used this type of rhetoric. As Trump’s legal team was challenging the results of the 2020 presidential election, the former National Security Advisor suggested that then-President Trump should order the military to seize control of voting machines and hold another election.

Flynn was not the only one to make a fool out of himself during the conference. Kraken lawyer Sidney Powell also made waves when she suggested that Trump could be reinstated and finish out the rest of President Joe Biden’s term. (See: Sidney Powell Reappears To Make Yet Another Stupid Claim)

The world of politics already has enough crazy at the moment without people like Flynn and Powell adding to it. But perhaps someone needs to give the lunatics on the hard left a run for their money, right?
