Former Vice President Joe Biden is set to make a significant announcement regarding immigration legislation on his first day in office. He will unveil his plan to give legal status to millions of illegal immigrants residing in the United States. Aside from the fact that this will encourage even more people to enter the country illegally, thereby costing Americans jobs, it sounds like a great plan, doesn’t it?

The Associated Press reported:

President-elect Joe Biden’s decision to immediately ask Congress to offer legal status to an estimated 11 million people in the country has surprised advocates given how the issue has long divided Democrats and Republicans, even within their own parties.

Biden will announce legislation on his first day in office to provide a path to citizenship for millions of immigrants in the United States illegally, according to four people briefed on his plans.

Marielena Hincapie, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, told the AP, “this really does represent a historic shift from Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda that recognizes that all of the undocumented immigrants that are currently in the United States should be placed on a path to citizenship.”

The AP observed, “if successful, the legislation would be the biggest move toward granting status to people in the country illegally since President Ronald Reagan bestowed amnesty on nearly 3 million people in 1986.”

According to Ali Noorani, president of the National Immigration Forum, those residing in the country illegally would be placed on an eight-year path to citizenship. Those in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program would be put on a faster track. The individuals protected by this program were brought to the U.S. by their parents when they were minors.

Noorani also argued that some of President Trump’s harsher immigration policies might have hurt him politically.

From the Associated Press:

Noorani said the separation of more than 5,000 children from the parents at the border, which peaked in 2018, alienated voters from Trump’s policies, particularly conservatives and evangelicals. He believes a constantly shifting outlook for DACA recipients also hurt Trump among people who felt he was using them as ‘political pawns.’

While many Americans would prefer more immigration, the fact that Trump was elected in 2016 shows that a larger number would favor more restrictions. He ran on stemming the flow of illegals into the United States and limiting legal immigration, which has created severe problems for American workers and small business owners.

Biden’s radical proposal is not likely to appeal to most Americans – especially since he has no plan to prevent more illegal aliens from entering the country and address the problems facing American workers impacted by immigration. But we know why the Democrats will promote this legislation as hard as they can, right?

The bottom line is that if they can give citizenship to over 11 million illegal immigrants, they will significantly boost their voter base. They are simply trying to gain an electoral advantage.

With control of the presidency and both chambers of Congress, the chances of the Democrats ramming through this proposal, as well as other radical leftist policies, are high. However, some left-leaning lawmakers might be hesitant to pull the trigger on such an extreme measure. At this point, it’s all we can hope for until 2022.
