Harvard University students are pushing the university to revoke the degrees of Trump allies and supporters who graduated from the Ivy League school. Apparently, it’s been a while since these individuals had their last fix, so they must be trying to get another shot to feed their addiction to attention.
Fox Business reported that “Harvard University students are now circulating a petition that calls for revoking degrees from Trump supporters and aides who attended the elite Ivy League institution.”
And what, pray tell, are they using to justify this foolishness?
You guessed it: They are using the riots at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 to target these deplorable individuals who dared to work with the Trump administration. According to the petition, Trump allies and supporters were part of spreading the “disinformation and mistrust” that resulted in the assault on the Capitol building.
The petition, which is titled “Revoke their Degrees” was distributed by four students who attend the university’s Kennedy School of Government. It urges the institution’s leadership to be “prepared to take a stand for representative democracy and against violent white supremacy,” by rescinding degrees of three Harvard alumni who support President Trump. These include White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), and Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX).
The document described these three individuals as “violent actors” who should face consequences for their conduct. Fox Business observed that the petition “is said to be gaining some traction among both current and former students.”
“I was surprised how popular this petition is even among mid-career students,” one student said on condition of anonymity. “It’s one thing for 22-year-olds to sign onto something radical but another thing for 40-year-olds to buy into it.”
The petition itself argues that those who have earned Harvard degrees are not actually entitled to them. Unfortunately, nobody seems to have told these poor kids that holding a degree isn’t contingent on political affiliation. Of course, like spoiled children, young authoritarians don’t seem to grasp the idea that they don’t get to call the shots.
From Fox Business:
The petition argues that a Harvard degree is ‘a privilege, not a right’ and therefore no one is entitled to keep their degree if they violate certain laws and societal norms. Some supporters of the effort have cited Harvard’s decision in 2010 to revoke a degree from a Russian spy, Andrey Bezrukov, as setting a precedent for revoking degrees from Trump associates.
But legal scholars say any move to revoke a degree would face serious court challenges. They say the Bezrukov example is a poor one because he attended the school using a pseudonym and pleaded guilty to spying on the US.
Noted legal scholar Alan Dershowitz told Fox Business, “it would be illegal and highly immoral to revoke a degree based on constitutionally protected actions like former students merely supporting the president.”
He continued, arguing that “ the end result would be to jeopardize federal funding,” because the university would essentially become a political institution.
This is not the first time Harvard students have tried to make themselves feel important by targeting Trump allies and aides. In November, they distributed a petition to ban those associated with the president from campus speaking engagements and even being on campus. The university’s leadership declined to take up the matter.
This story is just the latest component of the far-left’s current overreach campaign in which they are beclowning themselves by going over-the-top. It will be just one of many examples demonstrating that the left has become too cocky for its own good. The Democrats don’t know it yet, but if conservatives play their cards right, they will come to regret their conduct in 2022.
