Homeland Security Warns of Possible Violence During Georgia Senate Runoff Elections

Department of Homeland Security

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is warning of potential violence during the Georgia Senate runoff races, which are only two weeks away. Tensions are already running high in Georgia because the elections will determine which party controls the Senate. It seems that DHS is concerned that the situation could get even worse.

DHS issued a Dec. 22 report warning of potential “ideologically motivated violence” and also intimated that foreign interference could be a factor. The report, which was obtained by Yahoo News, stated that Georgia could see a “potentially heightened physical threat environment” that could lead to the level of violence seen during the presidential election season.

DHS cautioned that violence around the state capitol in Atlanta and other “symbolic political institutions” could adversely impact elected officials or election workers. “We further judge that violent extremists or other actors could quickly mobilize to violence or generate violent disruptions of otherwise lawful protests in response to a range of issues,” the report says. Some of these conflicts could also be motivated by the debate over the integrity of the 2020 presidential election.

According to Yahoo News,

“The agency based its judgments on a review of national and local media coverage, relevant social media postings, state law enforcement officials detailing ‘ideologically motivated violence or threats of violence’ and its other election violence assessments made over the past six months.”

Turnout for the Georgia runoff elections is expected to rise to record levels with almost a million voters voting early. The Democrats have to win both elections to seize control of the Senate.

Georgia has been one of the battleground states in which the results of the presidential race have been contested. President Trump’s legal team has filed a series of lawsuits in the state but, so far, none have succeeded in overturning the outcome.

Many on the right have criticized Republican Gov. Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger for not fighting hard enough to turn the results in Trump’s favor. The same criticism has also been directed at GOP Senate candidates David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler.

Some leaders in the Stop the Steal movement are currently trying to ensure that the Democrats gain control of the Senate by convincing Republican voters in Georgia to boycott the runoff elections to punish the GOP. Pro-Trump attorneys Lin Wood and Sidney Powell, along with several other leaders in the conservative movement, have supported this effort.

However, President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, along with several other right-leaning leaders and pundits have pushed back, urging conservative voters to show up at the polls. They are assuring voters that the elections will be closely monitored to prevent further election fraud.

DHS refers to threats made against elected officials to support its claims of potential violence. “The Homeland Security report cites threats made this month against individuals involved in Georgia’s audit and subsequent recount of votes cast in the presidential election, per local and national media coverage and law enforcement,” according to Yahoo News.

There have been multiple displays of politically-motivated violence since Election Day. These scenarios typically involve Antifa-aligned left-wing extremists showing up to conservative events like the “Stop the Steal” rallies in Washington D.C. and physically assaulting Trump supporters. It has happened at nearly every major pro-Trump event over the past year.

Given this reality, it is not hard to imagine that radical leftists will again use violence against conservatives during the runoff elections. The fact that activist media outlets like CNN, The New York Times, MSNBC, and others will run cover for these thugs will only embolden them. Hopefully, law enforcement will be present to ensure that the violence does not result in bloodshed.
