If you needed more evidence that the Republican establishment isn’t exactly looking out for your best interests, this story will do nicely. President Trump has opposed the bacon-infused stimulus bill and signaled that he would veto it if Congress fails to make key changes to the proposed legislation. In response, it looks like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) are working together to ram the legislation through anyway.
Both lawmakers were originally planning to override the president’s veto of the defense authorization bill. The New York Post reported that, “Senate leadership hammered out a bipartisan deal to override President Trump’s possible veto of the defense authorization bill, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced early Tuesday.”
On the Senate floor, McConnell said, “The Democrat leader and I have agreed to unanimous request as follows: The Senate will meet for pro forma sessions only until Dec. 29 when we will return to session.”
But now that Trump has come out against the stimulus proposal, it seems they are seeking to push the bill through despite Trump’s objections. However, McConnell has not yet indicated if his collaboration with Schumer on the defense bill will also apply to the Bacon bill.
The Hill reported that “two Republican aides on Wednesday said McConnell has yet to offer any guidance to the Senate Republican Conference on whether there will be an attempt to override Trump’s veto of the coronavirus relief and year-end funding bill, which leaders from both parties hailed as a major accomplishment this week.”
McConnell said on Tuesday:
“In the event that President Trump does elect to veto this bipartisan bill, it appears the House may choose to return after the holidays to set up a vote to consider the veto. … In the event that the president has vetoed the bill, and the House has voted to override the veto, the Senate would have the opportunity to process a veto override at that time.”
The Hill noted:
“A spokesman for Grassley later clarified that senators have been notified about returning to work for a potential override of a veto of the defense bill and that the time back in Washington could also be used to address the coronavirus relief package.”
On Tuesday, Trump released a video slamming Congress over the stimulus bill, which includes mostly provisions that have nothing to do with helping Americans impacted by the coronavirus. He also criticized the bill for its $600 payment that would be made to average citizens, calling it “ridiculously low.” He called for a $2,000 payment instead and urged Congress to remove the parts of the bill related to foreign aid and unnecessary project.
This is yet another example demonstrating that establishment Republicans are not concerned with adequately representing their constituents. Despite the backlash over the stimulus bill, it appears that McConnell and his ilk plan to foist the pork-laden proposal on the American people.
Let’s face it. The GOP establishment does not care about you or what you think. All they want from you is your votes so that they can stay in power. So are we finally going to have our “Popeye moment” and push these people out of office? Hopefully, this will be the straw that broke the camel’s back.
