President Trump is about to frustrate the “Orange Man Bad” crowd even more with this decision. Axios reported that anonymous sources stated that the president plans to pardon General Michael Flynn, his former national security adviser.
According to Axios, the president plans to issue a series of pardons including Flynn during his remaining days in office. Fox News reporter Kevin Corke confirmed the report.
The Hill reported that, “Flynn, who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russia’s former ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak, in 2017, has been involved in a protracted legal battle since the beginning of this year over whether his charges should be dropped due to prosecutorial misconduct.”
A prosecutor appointed by Attorney General William Barr reviewed the charges against Flynn and suggested that the Justice Department drop the charges. However, “an appeals court sided with U.S. District Judge Emmett Sullivan’s decision to not drop the charges and order an outside legal expert to evaluate the case,” according to The Hill.
Flynn previously agreed to plead guilty to the charges and cooperated with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the 2016 Trump campaign. But in 2020, he withdrew his plea agreement.
If President Trump pardons Flynn, it would likely put an end to his legal problems. This would potentially protect him if former Vice President Joe Biden becomes the next president.
Many on the right have called for Trump to pardon Flynn, arguing that his prosecution was clearly motivated by politics. Indeed, even the F.B.I. agents who interrogated him about his contacts with the Russian government did not believe he was deliberately trying to deceive them. Put simply, any objective observer could tell that the DOJ was railroading him because of his connection to Trump.
Earlier, the president commuted Roger Stone’s sentence after he was arrested in a pre-dawn raid televised by CNN. While Trump has not yet given details on the other people he will pardon, it seems clear that he is intent on protecting his allies from more politically-motivated prosecutions.
The left has shown that it has no problem using the government to attack its political opponents. They are already salivating at the thought of waging lawfare against Trump when he leaves office. But in the end, their tactics will likely end up the same as the Russiagate hoax.
