‘Stop The Steal’s’ Campaign to Boycott Georgia Runoff Election Is a Stupid Idea

There is a disturbing and asinine movement brewing on the right that could cost the Republican Party the Senate, if it gains any real traction. It was spawned out of a mostly-understandable resentment over how the presidential election turned out. Unfortunately, if these folks have their way, it will do far more harm than good.

Conservatives who are a part of the “Stop The Steal” movement have been urging fellow right-wingers to boycott the Georgia Senate runoff election. This move is intended to protest the perceived lack of support President Trump is getting from GOP politicians in the state.

On Saturday, a group of “Stop The Steal” protesters stood on the steps of the Georgia capitol building and expressed their anger at the Republican Party for allowing Biden to win the election through voter fraud. Newsweek reported that one of the participants held a microphone as he threatened the GOP.

“Any Republican who allows this to happen is complicit, and we will finish you,” he said. “For any Republicans not explicitly helping Trump to ‘stop the steal,’ we will make sure you are never elected ever again.”

Newsweek also reported that conservatives on Parler were suggesting that they refrain from showing up at the polls, to ensure that the incumbents, Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, remain in office. They alleged that the two senators were in on the supposed plot to steal the election from Trump. It is a theory that has been advanced by Sidney Powell, one of the attorneys who filed a lawsuit alleging voter fraud.

Reporter Marcus Baram published a post on Parler asking, “Friends in Geogia [sic]: If the voting machines are all rigged, how can you trust the runoff election.”

One user answered, “FROM RINOS BRIAN KEMP AND BRAD RAFFENSBERGER. BRIAN AND BRAD THINK THEY CAN USE DOMINION VOTE MACHINES TO ELECT CRAZY WARNOCK AND LIDDLE JON OSSOFF. IF ALL PATRIOTS BOYCOTT RIGGED #GASEN ELECTION, THE SUPREME COURT WILL ORDER A REVOTE!”

Another responded, “WE CANT!!!! WRITE IN TRUMP OR BOYCOTT #QANON”

Others replied in a similar fashion.

On Sunday, conservative pundit Ali Alexander, one of the leaders of the “Stop The Steal” movement, demanded that both Loeffler and Perdue issue press releases calling for a special session in which the voting process can be audited and monitored to ensure that no voter fraud takes place. He stated that if the movement’s demands are not met, they will boycott the election and encourage hundreds of thousands of Republican voters to do the same.

While both candidates have posted tweets calling for a special session, this still did not please Alexander, who reiterated his demand for a press release in a recent live stream on Periscope. During the video, he clarified his stance and issued a threat to both candidates: “We’re not voting for you. I will have 100,000 Republicans not vote for you on January 5th if I don’t get what we said we want.”

He continued: “Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue can either do what we said because we are their voters, we are their donors, we are their volunteers, or we’ll literally not vote.”

The movement is already receiving resistance from high-profile conservatives. Donald Trump Jr. took to Twitter to express his disapproval. I’m seeing a lot of talk from people that are supposed to be on our side telling GOP voters not to go out & vote for @KLoeffler and @PerdueSenate. That is NONSENSE. IGNORE those people. We need ALL of our people coming out to vote for Kelly & David,” he tweeted.

Townhall’s Kurt Schlichter also weighed in. “Maybe supposed allies should stop encouraging our voter to take dumb and self-destructive positions. We all need to have zero tolerance for dips***s who tell people to refuse to vote,” he wrote.

Alexander responded to Trump Jr., tweeting: “DON: Georgians have emailed and told us that they are not voting in an Election they believed to be rigged. You should talk to Georgians before your two NY/DC consultants. We should force the GA GOP to fix the election so we can Maximize GOP voter turnout or we lose! #GAsen”

To put it simply, trying to convince Republican voters to sit out the Georgia Senate election is one of the dumbest ideas anyone could concoct at this point. It is the type of foolhardy idea that comes from people who believe that President Trump is the end all be all. The truth is that there is far more to the government than the presidency. And the fact that Trump has just allowed the transition process to start indicates that even if he doesn’t accept defeat, he understands that this might be over soon.

Allowing the Democrats to take over the Senate just to make a point is the epitome of cutting off one’s nose to spite their face. Absolutely nothing positive will come from it. Indeed, it could have severely deleterious consequences for everyday Americans.

Biden and Harris have an agenda, and if he ends up becoming the next president, Democratic control of both chambers of Congress will make it much easier for him to realize their objectives. Helping the Democrats push the nation leftward is not the best way to send a message to the GOP.

Let’s fight smart, not stupid.
