California Sheriff Announces His Refusal to Enforce Gov. Newsom’s Coronavirus Restrictions

It looks like at least one California sheriff is following the examples of New York sheriffs who refuse to enforce asinine coronavirus restrictions. But this particular scenario is even more special because it involves the law enforcement agency that serves the county in which California Gov. Gavin Newsom resides.

On Thursday, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s office announced that it would not enforce the latest coronavirus restrictions put into place by Gov. Newsom. “The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office will not be determining—including entering any home or business—compliance with, or enforcing compliance of, any health or emergency orders related to curfews, staying at home, Thanksgiving or other social gatherings inside or outside the home, maximum occupancy, or mask mandates,” said Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones in a statement released shortly after the state issued a coronavirus curfew that would restrict residents from 10 pm and 5 am.

Scott’s office stated that no officers will be deployed for anyone violating the order. Callers who wish to snitch on other residents will be advised to contact the county health department at 311.

Earlier on Thursday, Gov. Newsom announced on Twitter that he would be imposing a curfew and other restrictions on Californians ostensibly to stop the spread of COVID-19.

“Due to the rise in #COVID19 cases, CA is issuing a limited Stay at Home Order,” Newsom tweeted. “Non-essential work and gatherings must stop from 10pm-5am in counties in the purple tier. This will take effect at 10 pm on Saturday and remain for 1 month. Together–we can flatten the curve again.”

Of course, the governor’s orders were met with scorn and derision, especially since he clearly does not practice what he preaches. He was humiliated when he was caught eating dinner with a large group of people without wearing a mask, which was a brazen violation of his own rules.

While Sheriff Scott’s announcement is certainly welcome, he serves only one county. What can we expect from the rest of the state? Moreover, how many Californians will actually honor the extra restrictions that Newsom has imposed?

It seems apparent that many Golden State residents will refuse to obey the governor’s Thanksgiving edicts. Many other restrictions are pretty much unenforceable. So do these new rules carry any weight? At some point, Democratic governors like Newsom will need to look for actual solutions instead of relying on meaningless restrictions that are not effective.
