It appears that it doesn’t take much to make a major corporation give in to the Church of Progressivism these days, does it? Target became the latest company to prostrate itself before the altar of the woke after a Twitter user complained about a book in its inventory.
On Thursday, Target posted a tweet stating that it will stop selling “Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters,” by Abigail Shrier because it discusses the transgender movement and its effect on young girls. The company made its decision after a user informed it of the anti-woke content in the book.
“Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. We have removed this book from our assortment,” the company tweeted after being confronted by an activist whose account is now locked.

Shrier, the author of the book, responded on Twitter, taking Target to task for its feckless decision. “Target.com just made my book disappear,” she tweeted. “Does it bother anyone that Woke activists and spineless corporations now determine what Americans are allowed to read?”

The book criticizes the impact of transgenderism on young girls, pointing out how it encourages them to take life-altering drugs, undergo irreversible surgery, and adopt an opposite-sex identity.
Target isn’t the only company that has tried to suppress exposure for the book, according to Shrier. In July, she tweeted:
“Amazon explicitly bars ads for the book, while granting ads to books that celebrate the medical transition of teen girls who suddenly decide they’re trans. If you don’t think that indicates that Amazon is a retailer with a strong opinion, I’m not sure what to say. :)”
Target first publicly expressed its faith in the progressive religion back in 2015 when it started promoting “gender-neutral” product lines in kid’s sections. In 2016, the company insisted that men who identify as women are allowed to share restrooms with biological women. Breitbart News noted that the company’s decisions prompted “a huge consumer correction that temporarily chopped up to one-third of the company’s stock value.”
In a piece for Quillette, Shrier defended the content of her book, explaining that it was not directed at adults who choose to transition, but at the practice of pushing children to make that decision. She wrote:
“I wrote specifically about the sudden, severe spike in transgender identification among adolescent girls. I fully support medical transition for mature adults. And I have no desire to be a provocateur. (I dislike pointless provocation, in part because I think provocateurs often have a good argument—one they’re too lazy or inept to make). Nor do I have any prurient interest in others’ social lives.”
The author continued, detailing the problematic consequences involved with pushing transgenderism on children:
“What I aim to do, as a journalist, is to investigate cultural phenomena, and here was one worth investigating: Between 2016 and 2017, the number of females seeking gender surgery quadrupled in the United States. Thousands of teen girls across the Western world are not only self-diagnosing with a real dysphoric condition they likely do not have; in many cases, they are obtaining hormones and surgeries following the most cursory diagnostic processes.”
Regardless of what one might feel about the opinions Shrier expresses in her book, the notion that a company like Target would censor it is absurd, but not surprising. But it is unlikely that the company made this decision based on the complaints of a random Twitter user. It likely received other complaints through other communication channels.
Either Target’s leadership agrees with the Church of Progressivism, or it is too cowardly to defy its acolytes. But this story is yet another example of the hold that the Marxist crowd has on the culture — it can manipulate entire corporations into doing its bidding. None of this will change until they are dethroned and marginalized.
Anyway, the book is available here. I’m sure the woke crowd would absolutely HATE it if you bought it, so please don’t hurt their feelings. They’re easily triggered enough, aren’t they?
