Bernie Sanders Alienates Pro-Life Democrats

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) laid down the law on Saturday night on Democrats who would dare to commit the unpardonable sin: Being pro-life. The Democratic Party has been systematically alienating members who are not on the pro-abortion train for years as they lurch farther to the left. Last night, Sanders affirmed that the party would remain stubbornly pro-abortion.

The senator participated in a presidential forum called “Our Rights, Our Courts,” which was hosted by the Demand Justice Initiative, The Center for Reproductive Rights, and NARAL Pro-Choice America. The event, which was focused on “reproductive rights,” gave candidates an opportunity to discuss the threats facing the pro-abortion agenda.

Of course, every single candidate vying for the Democratic presidential nomination stated that they support abortion rights. But it was Sanders who was asked about pro-life Democrats and their role in the Democratic Party. His answer was simple, but telling. “I think being pro-choice is an absolutely essential part of being a Democrat.”

Sanders continued, explaining that he could not see an argument for opposing abortion. “When we talk about what a Democrat is, being pro-choice is essential to that vision,” he insisted. He pointed out the number of Democratic lawmakers who are pro-choice. “If you’re asking me – and I think I may be wrong on this – I think in the Senate, probably 95 percent of the Democrats are pro-choice, the other few are not. In the House, maybe even a higher percentage” he explained.

Ultimately, the senator conceded that he would not turn away supporters who held pro-life views. But he emphasized that he personally found these views repugnant. Later in the night, he discussed his Medicare for All proposal that would cover abortions. He has also argued for expanding funding for Planned Parenthood.

There are still some people in the Democratic Party that aren’t as adamant about ostracizing pro-lifers. But it is clear that the party has fully embraced pro-abortion policies. Perhaps some of those who take the issue of life seriously might not be so keen on the Democrats in the future. Alienating these individuals might cause more harm than good in the end.
