Tom Coburn, Ron Johnson, and Pat Toomey Should be Ashamed

Tom Coburn cares about the size and scope of the federal government. So do Ron Johnson and Pat Toomey. But they just voted for a tax increase with legislation that was not even publicly available. In other words, they voted for a law that was not even written for them to review. And what was in the law?Nothing to rein in the size of Washington. A tax increase on income. And a payroll tax increase on all Americans. In fact, the Senate deal brings in less revenue than John Boehner’s Plan B, not that it was ever going to become law.The only intent of the legislation, we now know from the White House, was to break the Republicans. The White House wanted to get the GOP to break their no tax pledge.Tom Coburn, Ron Johnson, and Pat Toomey were complicit in this.Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Mike Lee, Richard Shelby, Chuck Grassley (who wanted a farm bill) voted no.Coburn, Johnson, and Toomey might console themselves into thinking they’ll now have leverage with the debt ceiling. But their colleagues have already proven themselves unserious on spending cuts. We are that this point because in the last debt ceiling debate Congress agreed to a series of cuts and has now used this vote to weasel out of those cuts.Any member of congress thinking they’ll get him now with the next debt ceiling increase is fooling themselves to avoid having to realize what a fool they are.
