1. This Week in Washington – May 3, 2010
This week, the Senate will start work on amending the ObamaBailout bill as the House takes up “Cash for Caulkers.” In the wake of the attempted terrorist attack in New York City’s Times Square and the oil spill in the Gulf, expect discussion this week in the House and Senate about anti-terrorism and offshore drilling. Oversight hearings are expected on both issues. Conservatives eagerly await the President’s announcement of who he will pick to replace Justice Stevens on the Supreme Court. The issues for this week are as follows . . .Please click here for the rest of the post.
2. Nashville Drowning: Obama’s silent, HOPE crumbles like a Coke can
This weekend, Nashville received around 10 inches of rain – a record breaking rain fall that has caused an astounding amount of flooding. The surrounding rivers swelled and as of this afternoon have yet to crest, so water continues to rush through the streets and into buildings. Thousands have lost their homes. The Opryland Hotel is holding 8-10 feet of water. Businesses have lost everything.President Obama has yet to acknowledge that anything has even happened in Middle Tennessee… most likely because he’s in damage control mode, trying to salvage a response to the LAST disaster. Please click here for the rest of the post.
3. How Does Obama Keep A Straight Face?
Barack Obama seems to believe that Unions are not “special interest” groups. Either that, or he really believes we’re just too stupid to understand what he says and pay attention – over time – to what he actually does.In his Book “Audacity of Hope” then-Junior Senator Obama had an interesting comment about Unions. Please click here for the rest of the post.
4. Pennsylvania Outsleazes the Bill Collector
The state of Pennsylvania has a new commercial out for those who haven’t paid their taxes yet. Just tell me this doesn’t creep you out a little. Please click here for the rest of the post.
5. Is there Bipartisan Support in the House for Obama’s VAT?
As income taxes creep towards their highest rates in decades, five Republicans are reportedly cosponsoring a bill to make you may pay more tax in the checkout line, as well. The Hill is reporting that Rep. Bill Pascrall (D-NJ) has found five Republicans to go along with his proposal to impose a “Value-Added Tax” on products imported from countries that also have a VAT — a list which currently includes Mexico, India, and the entire European Union, along with many others. Please click here for the rest of the post.
6. Oil Spill Reality Check
God willing, the Gulf Coast may be spared Prince-William-Sound-like images of waves of tarry goo slapping ashore, while wild birds and cuddly mammals struggle for survival in asphaltine muck.Last Friday, the Lafayette Daily Advertiser reported on the rescue of the first oil-covered bird Louisiana:”It was the only animal being cleaned late Friday morning, but rescuers expected many more to come in throughout the day.”Hmmm. Seen any more pictures? Me either. Please click here for the rest of the post.
7. State Capitalism
There is a lot of talk these days about “state capitalism”. What is it?The best definition is perhaps, “a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.”In other words, it is textbook socialism. But just as liberals now call themselves progressives, they now call socialism “state capitalism”.Please click here for the rest of the post.
