Former Vice President Joe Biden spoke to supporters at the Workers’ Presidential Summit in Philadelphia on Tuesday and touted his proposal for an $8,000 tax credit to pay for childcare costs. He said:
You get a tax break for a racehorse, why in God’s name couldn’t we provide an $8,000 tax credit for everybody who has childcare costs? It would put 720 million women back in the workforce. It would increase the GDP, to sound like a wonk here, by about eight-tenths of one percent. It would grow the economy.
His remarks can be heard in the clip below.
Despite a US population of only 330 million, Joe Biden says child tax credit would put 720 million women back into the workforce.
That’s like double the population of the US. pic.twitter.com/DgChhZRzFl

Another blunder by the frontrunner in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. Nearly every time Biden speaks, he commits another gaffe. Democrats seem to be slowly coming around to the fact that he will not be able to beat Trump. Although Biden has managed to maintain his lead in most polls, there are signs he is losing ground to Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).
An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released on Tuesday questioned 506 Democratic primary voters between September 13-16 about their level of enthusiasm for each candidate. Warren led the field at 35%, Sanders came in at 25% and Biden at 23%. In March, Warren was at 20%, Sanders at 28% and Biden at 33%. (Enthusiasm for Kamala Harris stood at 22% in March and has fallen to 13% in September.)
All of this is to say that primary voters are watching and they’re noticing.
Here are some responses to Biden’s comment on Twitter:
Joe think he’s running to be President of China maybe?
When you want to divide by two, but end up multiplying. And still get it wrong.
Democrats routinely count the recently deceased. Honest mistake.
That 720 million women number is AFTER Joe cures cancer. #MakingSenseWithJoe
Yikes! The US population is 330 million but Joe Biden says a child tax credit would put 720 million women back in the workforce.
Biden is the gift that keeps on giving.😏
On Tuesday, the Trump campaign released a video montage of Biden’s recent stumbles. It’s a collection of his greatest hits interspersed with journalist commentary. Watch the video.
