President Trump is working tirelessly to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. For most Americans, his efforts are admirable. For MSNBC and those in the far left media, his efforts are self-motivated. President Trump has kept most of his efforts regarding the war private—he never wants to lose an angle he may be able to negotiate from. This past Sunday, President Trump took to Truth Social to send a clear message to all involved:
“I’ve always had a very good relationship with Vladimir Putin of Russia, but something has happened to him. He has gone absolutely CRAZY! He is needlessly killing a lot of people, and I’m not just talking about soldiers. Missiles and drones are being shot into Cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever. I’ve always said that he wants ALL of Ukraine, not just a piece of it, and maybe that’s proving to be right, but if he does, it will lead to the downfall of Russia! Likewise, President Zelenskyy is doing his Country no favors by talking the way he does. Everything out of his mouth causes problems, I don’t like it, and it better stop. This is a War that would never have started if I were President. This is Zelenskyy’s, Putin’s, and Biden’s War, not “Trump’s,” I am only helping to put out the big and ugly fires, that have been started through Gross Incompetence and Hatred.”

From the beginning of Trump 2.0, he has been very clear that he wants to end this war between Russia and Ukraine. For anyone to insinuate any differently is extremely disingenuous. This is where MSNBC and Semafor writer Dave Weigel come in. In an episode of "Deadline: White House" with Michael Steel, Weigel makes an outrageous claim against President Trump and his desire to end this war:
Steele: That’s the thing that that I find the most striking, Dave, is, is the fact that, you know, you have Trump saying all this stuff now about Putin and, you know, the Kremlin, of course, dismissed this, mockingly suggesting that he has, quote, emotional overload from peace talks. You know, in other words, he has PDS — Putin Derangement Syndrome — going on right now. What do you make of all of this? And what does that say very much to Amy's point, the words are just words. Zelensky, like Putin and Putin like Zelenskyy, are both relying on the actions that Donald Trump takes with regard to both parties in this war.
Weigel: Well, Trump set the standard for himself very high during the campaign, which was that he had such a good relationship with Putin. He was going to end the war immediately. First day in office, he later said, that was sarcastic, but just traveling the country, I would meet voters who thought Donald Trump was a peace president, and Joe Biden was a chaos president because Trump could point to the record. And I can’t read the Russians' minds, but Trump has been very political in what he wants out of this, which is some sort of deal that lets him say that he made peace, that lets him campaign for the Nobel Peace Prize. And I’m barely truncating what he said. He’s obsessed with some sort of recognition that, between the deals he’s making with Arab Emirates, between whatever he can do, he can pull off a Russia that he deserves some credit for peace. So they know that they just what would the deal look like? Would it be like, would it roll back Ukrainian territory? Would it include the minerals deal? Those are almost immaterial because what he wants out of this is just the ability to say, I did what other presidents could have, and that gives them tons of room to negotiate around him.
This is ridiculous and false. I want to break down a couple of the points Weigel makes in this segment. One, he says, “… just traveling the country, I would meet voters who thought Donald Trump was a peace president, and Joe Biden was a chaos president because Trump could point to the record.” Does anyone question whether Putin would have started a war in Ukraine had Trump been in office for two consecutive terms? That’s not even arguable. Putin took Crimea while Obama was in office, did nothing during Trump’s first term, and invaded the entire country under Biden. We don’t have to wonder — Putin would not have invaded Ukraine under Trump.
Secondly, to say that Trump just wants “ …some sort of deal that lets him say that he made peace, that lets him campaign for the Nobel Peace Prize.” Excuse me? President Trump only wants peace because he wants the Nobel Peace Prize? That’s a disgusting take and clearly false. Trump hates war and is constantly working to keep us out of war and end others. Also, have you ever heard of the Abraham Accords? President Trump normalized relationships with Israel and brought stable peace to the Middle East and didn’t get the Nobel Peace Prize for that. I don’t think he’s holding his breath.
The problem with this type of analysis is that it’s not just lazy, but verifiably false. I understand the left is going to attack President Trump, but stating he is only chasing awards instead of ending wars is ridiculous. Some things never change.
