Authorities say that the suspect used what appears to be an accelerant, spraying the office door, before setting it ablaze and fleeing the scene. Authorities have not determined a motive, and say the suspect remains at large. Police released a grainy photo of a man wearing an orange beanie, dark jacket, and white Nike sneakers, and carrying what appears to be a tote bag.

On Friday morning, the Burlington Fire Department posted a statement to Facebook after responding to reports of a fire at 1 Church Street, identified as Sanders' office.

The fire department wrote:

The Burlington Fire Department was dispatched to a reported fire on the 3rd floor of 1 Church Street, The Masonic Temple. Crews arrived to find the sprinkler system and fire alarms activated and a fire in the vestibule between the elevator and the entrance door to Senator Bernard Sanders’ office.

The fire was extinguished, and the Senator's office and surrounding offices were searched and cleared of occupants. No injuries were reported. The door to the Senator's office sustained moderate fire damage, and the third floor and floors below sustained significant water damage. Fire crews deployed salvage covers on the floors below to protect items from water.

The Burlington Fire Marshal’s office, Burlington Police Department, and Vermont State Police are on scene, and an investigation is being conducted. If anyone has information regarding this incident, please contact the Burlington Fire Marshal’s office at 802-864-5577 or [email protected].

**UPDATE **

The Burlington Fire Marshal’s office has deemed this fire incendiary in nature. The origin and cause investigation has been transferred to the Vermont State Police. The Burlington Police Department and The Vermont State Police will conduct a joint investigation.

Sanders, who lives in Burlington and served as its mayor before being elected to Congress, was not in his office or even in the state at the time of the incident. He was rallying with striking hotel workers on a picket line in downtown Los Angeles.

Sanders' state director Kathryn Van Haste said in a statement,

We are relieved that no one on our staff and, to our understanding, no one in the building was harmed.

Van Haste credited the swift response of local first responders, who are currently collaborating with the U.S. Capitol Police and the Senate Sergeant at Arms. The U.S. Capitol Police safeguard Congressional premises and members of Congress, both in Washington, D.C., and their respective home districts.

The building, a historic structure previously housing a Masonic temple, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The brick building is also home to several office and retail spaces.

This is a developing story, and RedState will continue to follow it for updates.
