When the Los Angeles riots were happening back in the ’90s, Korean business owners grabbed guns and defended their businesses like the Texans defended the Alamo, only it came out a lot more favorable for the Koreans. Their weapons acted as an excellent deterrent and the Korean part of LA came out of the riots not much worse for wear.
Now, as the riots in Minneapolis burn hot, armed citizens have taken to protecting local businesses in an effort to make sure rioters and looters don’t touch them.
Two men, in particular, posted up in front of a tobacco shop with AR-15’s, ready to defend it from rioters.
Interestingly, when they were asked what they were doing, they first brought up abuse of authority by lawmakers, noting that a cop is less likely to tread on someone’s rights when there are other armed Americans with them.
“Basically you see the records that cops keep. And cops are a lot less likely to try and tread on people’s rights when there’s other armed Americans with them,” said one of the men to Max Nesterak. “I figured it’s about damn time that some heavily armed rednecks stood with fellow citizens.”
The men said they’d been offering their assistance to local businesses to act as deterrents from looters in order to keep their stores from being cleaned out and burned down.
“It turns out these guys are out here with machetes and shattered windows trying to keep looters out of the businesses ’cause cops can’t get in here,” said one of the unidentified men. “So I figured before there were cops, there were just Americans, so here we are. Bottom line, justice for Floyd and I hope they stop looting at some point.”
The two men made it clear that they support the protests, just not the looting.

The reaction to these men has been mixed, with claims that they’re trying to find an excuse to shoot black people or that bringing guns to an area is only asking for escalation. However, it would appear this isn’t the case at all. In the background, there appear to be two black men, and what’s more, the men clearly point out that they’re doing as the Koreans did in LA during the riots and acting as a deterrent, which clearly works.
The truth is, small businesses need to be protected as they don’t have the same safety nets corporate businesses have. Not that corporate businesses need to be burned down either, but here, we’re looking at the life’s work and livelihoods of locals who aren’t guilty of any of the police actions that killed George Floyd.
