Democrat politicians are hooked. They’re getting a taste of what the power they’ve always dreamed of having feels like and now they’re injecting it directly into their veins like junkies. The hits are many and the highs are high. The only problem is that, like most drug abusers, they’re hurting the people around them and in this case, these people are about to strip their drug from them by force.
I don’t think I need to go over the many moves against freedom made from people like Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer or Virginia Governor Ralph Northam. They’ve been very open about their unceasing desire to push draconianism on the people of their respective states and the people have been very open about their displeasure over it in return.
Trouble is, authoritarians like Whitmer and Northam aren’t listening to the people. In fact, like Whitmer, they’re showing contempt for the people who don’t like being ruled in a free country. What’s more, they’re trying to take it one step further. Various states are gearing up to violate the Constitution in order to keep a firm grasp on their newfound power.
As the Spectator reported recently, some states are looking to form compacts to resist the “road map” for reopening the country and keep their states locked down.
Article I, Section 10, Clause 3 of our Constitution makes it pretty clear that this isn’t allowed.
No State shall, without the Consent of Congress, lay any Duty of Tonnage, keep Troops, or Ships of War in time of Peace, enter into any Agreement or Compact with another State, or with a foreign Power, or engage in War, unless actually invaded, or in such imminent Danger as will not admit of delay.
As the Spectator points out, states everywhere are looking to form these compacts to stop the reopening of the country from happening:
Yet, in the Northeast—Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island have entered into an interstate compact. In the Midwest—Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin have also formed such a pact. In the West—California, Oregon and Washington have entered into yet another compact. In other words, these governors hope to violate the Constitution to avoid reopening their states. This is a forlorn hope, however. All of these states are targets of the lockdown protesters.
The natural excuse for this is that they’re doing it in order to save lives and while it’s likely that lives will be saved from the virus if the lockdowns continue, it doesn’t factor in the lives that will be destroyed or lost from the economic ruin that is already hurting this nation to no end. Poverty results in fewer healthcare options, financial ruin often results in suicide, marriages fracture and dissolve, less healthy foods begin to appear on more and more tables due to the price, resulting in more health problems, and the stress of it all alone is enough to threaten even the healthiest people.
For a party that believes the working class is put upon and downtrodden, it sure is doing a lot to make sure they can’t work and things get even worse for them. Democrats speak often of all the hardships, health problems, and more that the poor face yet they’re perfectly fine with creating more of them without much afterthought.
Conservatives get a bad rap in the mainstream media because we want to get people back to work and get our economy back in order. They accuse us of putting profits over people, but in reality, we’re looking at the broader picture. We’re not just roaming through the forest watching for bears. We’re also looking out for the snakes, poisonous berries, and other hazards we may run into.
Thing is, it’s hard to maintain support for a months-long shelter in place order. Even party supporters are going to find it difficult to be agreeable when putting food on the table to feed their kids begins to get difficult. It gets even worse when they see other people in other states returning to work, enjoying freedoms, and living well.
Sooner than later, the attitudes of blue state citizens will sour and their ire, as it naturally does, will turn to the people in charge, and worse for the elected officials who donned their figurative crowns, the jobless people in isolation are going to have a lot of time on their hands. They’re going to voice their displeasure and it will be a voice within a chorus of displeased people. The politicians in charge will become public enemy number one and you can damn well bet it’s not going to reflect well on the party, especially if the pattern of authoritarianism to party loyalty fits.
All Democrats have to do in order to stop that future from happening is something they will never do, and that’s go along with what Trump says. They will defy him at all costs if need be, and believe me, the cost won’t just be their jobs, it’ll also be the lives and livelihoods of the states they rule over.
