Game of Thrones has been a cultural juggernaut for nearly a decade, and has generated a rabid fandom in that time that rivals even the largest IP’s. Even Avengers: Endgame had to share hype with the Season 8 premiere of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy epic.

But then as fans of the show watched the eighth season unfold, it was clear that something had gone horribly wrong. The writing seemed lazy. Payoffs that fans have been waiting for and teased with over the course of years were suddenly tossed out. Character arcs that had been meticulously crafted through hours of episodes suddenly ended with the equivalent of a shrug. Wolves were not pet.

Needless to say, the fans excitement had turned to pure ire. Message boards and social media sites from every corner of the internet were aflame with rage as the fandom felt cheated.

The anger of the fans was all directed at two people, producers and show writers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. These two men are largely blamed for the show tripping at the finish line, and the Game of Thrones community is ready to tar and feather the two before dragging them through the street to the old hangin’ tree.

But since that’s illegal, the community has opted to try a different route to set things right.

An online user of Change.org named Dylan D. started a petition to have Season 8 remade, but this time with Weiss and Benioff nowhere near it. As the description for the petition states, Weiss and Benioff a “woefully incompetent writers” and that the series finale deserves better:

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on.

This series deserves a final season that makes sense.

Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!

While the petition may seem silly, it’s being taken seriously by the fans. As of this writing, the petition has garnered over 480,000 signatures and continues to rise by the minute.

Those who left explanations as to why they signed on the site are less than friendly.

“Because this isn’t subverting expectation, it’s just really bad television,” wrote one co-signer.

“I feel like I’ve wasted the last 8 years of my life because of this last season,” read another message.

“Game of Thrones went from being one of the best stories of all time to a complete ridiculous farce with Season 8! Don’t let it go down in history this way. All of the amazing and wonderful characters we have come to love and suffer with deserve a better last season. Even if Sunday night’s final episode is a “good” one, I think the overall effect of season 8 has been to completely reverse the initial ingenuity of this show!!!” wrote another signer.

Weiss, nor Benioff, have come out and commented on the controversy, but did reveal previously that they would be far away from the internet, in hiding, and drunk according to Cinema Blend.

“We’ll in an undisclosed location, turning off our phones and opening various bottles,” said Weiss.

“I plan to be very drunk and very far from the internet,” added Benioff.
