Anti-Gun Rally With No Security Ends With Man Shot

An anti-gun rally in Brown Park Tuesday night in Lafayette, Louisiana, ended when a 22-year-old boy was shot.

According to KATC-TV, the rally was being held in response to the shooting death of local boxer Brandon Broussard on Tuesday night, when several gunshots rang out. Only one man was shot, though thankfully, non-fatally.

KATC reported that the Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department was not aware that an event was being held in the park, and Parks and Rec Police Chief Oscar Benoit issued a statement saying that security would have been provided had the rally been made official.

Relatives of Broussard say that the rally wasn’t even brought up to Broussard’s parents, and had not endorsed it.

No arrests have been made at this time.

Thankfully no one was hurt, but this should be a very stern lesson to everyone. Being “anti-gun violence” is all well and good, but gun violence does happen and disarming yourself won’t stop those with criminal intent from using firearms against you. In fact, over 98 percent of mass shootings have occurred in gun-free zones.

If you truly want to reduce gun violence, then the threat of gun violence used for good is a proven way to make that happen. In February alone, so much tragedy was avoided thanks to the presence of a trained and legally armed civilian.

What’s more, there is a reason city officials like to provide security for events like these. Large, unarmed crowds are easy targets for maximum damage. As this incident proved, mischief happens. This time it wasn’t deadly, and this time the shooter didn’t stick around to finish the job. If he had, however, this would be a much more horrifying story that elevated the statistics unnecessarily.
