I’m not sure whether to be happy or angry about this.
To the Washington politicians, a government shutdown is apocalyptic. People will die, buildings will crumble, muh roads won’t be maintained, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!
To the vast majority of us, however, we honestly couldn’t care less. The only people who do get affected are non-essential personnel within the government. So park employees, museum employees, monument minders would all be sent home until the shutdown ends. Federal employees will still receive paychecks and VA benefits and tax refunds may be delayed. While I feel horrid for all of those listed, it’s not exactly the end of the world.
You’ll wake up tomorrow morning and planes won’t be falling out of the skies as the air traffic controllers will still be at work. You’ll still even be accosted by the TSA while you’re at the airport too. Your mail will still arrive at its usual time as the post office will still be open.
In other words, it’s very likely you won’t notice a difference.
Interestingly, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) is prophesying her typical brand of doom and gloom, threatening that President Donald Trump doesn’t know what he’s doing when it comes to threatening the shut down of a government if he doesn’t get his funding for a border wall. Speaking to the press about the fight between Trump and the Democrats over funding for the border wall, Pelosi made it seem like Trump was a drunken child behind the wheel who doesn’t understand that he’s about to drive his vehicle straight into the wall and that a government shutdown is so bad for the country that it costs us dearly.
Of course, Pelosi doesn’t seem too bothered by a shutdown either despite her dark view on the future if we have one. We know that because while speaking to the press she hinted that she’d be willing to keep the government shut down “forever” if the Democrats don’t get their way either.

Pelosi is missing one issue, however. When it comes to shutdown battles, the President is the one who always wins. As Ben Shapiro once pointed out during the shutdown last January, a pattern has developed over the decades that prove that threatening a President with a government shutdown will usually end in a victory for him:
This makes the second government shutdown in the last five years; back in 2013, the Republicans refused to fund then-President Obama’s Affordable Care Act and then collapsed and fully funded it for nothing in return. That followed a government shutdown in 1995-1996 that ended after nearly a month, with Republicans receiving nothing from then-President Bill Clinton. And that government shutdown followed the one in November 1995, when Republicans received merely an agreement from President Clinton to balance the budget within seven years.
Notice a pattern? The president always wins government shutdowns. Congress never does.
And sure enough, Trump easily won that shutdown battle after only three days.
If Pelosi wants to play political chicken here, then more power to her, but she should know by now that it’s only going to empower her opponent.
And bonus: Our government shuts down.
