Feel Good Story of the Day: Cosby Show Actor Shamed for Having Menial Labor Job Given Acting Role by Tyler Perry

This image released by ABC shows co-host Robin Roberts, left, with "The Cosby Show" actor Geoffrey Owens during an interview on "Good Morning America," Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018, in New York. Owens says he’s thankful for the support he has received since photos of him working a regular job at a grocery store showed up on news sites. He said on ABC’s “Good Morning America” that he did feel some people were trying to job shame him. But he stressed that “every job is worthwhile and valuable.” (Paula Lobo/ABC via AP)

If you’re like me, you were irked by the sudden appearance of a story that essentially poked fun at former Cosby Show actor Geoffrey Owens for working at a grocery store despite the fact that he once appeared on one of TV’s most watched shows.

It was shameful to watch the world essentially laugh at a man for his current predicament, especially since he was still working, and not sitting around collecting unemployment. People don’t realize that acting consists of spates of work, followed by long periods of nothing. What’s more, there’s no guarantee that your gig will pay you well. The publicity is sometimes just as valuable.

But thankfully, the publicity that Owens received has led to something of a happy turnaround for him, as his story was seen by famed actor/producer Tyler Perry, according to The Hill:

Geoffrey Owens accepted Perry’s offer to appear on the show “The Haves and Have Nots” in a recurring role for 10 episodes, TMZ reported on Friday.

Owens will reportedly fly down to Atlanta to begin filming next week, the outlet noted.

Perry tweeted out that he respected Owens willingness to work between gigs, and wanted to reward the actor’s ethic with more work.

All’s well that ends well. It’s always good to see someone who refused to get knocked down and stayed on his feet get rewarded for his perseverance. Thankfully, the outpouring of support Owens got led to a very happy ending to the story. Hopefully, after he’s done appearing on Perry’s drama, he’ll continue to get acting work.
