The question of whether or not teachers should be able to carry firearms in school has begun, and one Sheriff in Ohio is proactively training teachers to handle guns by giving them free lessons.

Fox Business reported that Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones offered the training to teachers after the Parkland school shooting which left 17 dead, and the response was far greater than he had originally anticipated, with hundreds signing up within hours.

From Fox Business:

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones told FOX Business’ Liz MacDonald that the response from teachers and school administrators has been overwhelming.

“We thought we’d get 20, 25 signed up. We had 50 within the first hour. We had 100 within two hours, we had three hundred within like five hours. We offered to teachers first, then we start getting calls from a secretary that works in the school, janitors that work in the school,” Jones said.

Ohio isn’t the only place this is reportedly happening, however. Fox Business reports that 225 districts in a dozen states have teachers partaking in firearms training.

This is music to Jones’ ears.

“There’s nowhere you go that you don’t have guns. America, that’s our culture. You are not going to stop crazy people from coming in getting guns but you can stop the carnage in three to four minutes of any shooting,” Jones said.

New Life Baptist Academy, a private school out in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has both armed security and armed teachers. Furthermore, they train their students on how to deal with active shooters just like they would train students for fire drills. The school was founded by a former police officer who believes that in today’s world, this kind of protection for the children is necessary.

Perhaps we may see many schools adopt the policies of New Life Baptist Academy.
