It’s become a predictable pattern now. First, a celebrity hears about the North Carolina law prohibiting transgendered people from using the bathroom they identify with. Then, said celebrity decides to virtue signal by proclaiming to one and all that they will no longer be performing in North Carolina.

How brave and forward thinking.

In a previous post, I’ve written what the law is actually about. The tl;dr of it is that this isn’t to hate on transgendered people in the least. This is to stop perverts from freely gaining access to women at their most vulnerable, by pretending to be transgendered. To anyone, no matter how they identify, this would seem like common sense.

Still, you get businesses and celebrities making a media assisted stink about how they’re turning their back on North Carolina. PayPal decided they weren’t going to build a global HQ there, even though they have HQ’s in places like Singapore, which arrest gays on site just for being gay. More hilariously, porn site xhamster.com, has stated that they have blocked service to anyone with a North Carolina IP address due to their passing of the bathroom law. This puts a monumental burden on other porn sites, who now have to get down to the task of figuring out how they could ever thank xhamster enough for the added traffic.

But as far as these celebrities go, their hypocrisy is over their boycotts is nothing short of hysterical. Let’s go over just how brave they are for standing up to big, mean North Carolina.

Bruce Springsteen

“The Boss” came down hard on NoCo by canceling his tour date in Greensboro on April 10th, stating that he and his band were standing in “solidarity with those freedom fighters.”

Stand in in solidarity huh? I suppose that means he’s going to cancel his dates in Italy, which doesn’t recognize unions with same sex couples? Is he going to refuse to play in Italy from here on?

Furthermore, Bruce operates under the Sony label, who does business in countries where you can be jailed, or even killed for being gay. Is Bruce going to drop Sony in solidarity with the freedom fighters? If he’s that into moral grandstanding, then that would be his next logical move, right?

Of course he won’t. Springsteen isn’t in it to do the right thing, he’s in it for his own relevancy. His flagging, sagging relevancy.

SMOD2016 might have the right of it, though.

Bryan Adams

Adams is famous for what I personally – and seriously – believe, is the worst love song of all time. Now he’s recently reentered the spotlight by taking the Springsteen route, and canceling his tour date in North Carolina, because it Jiminy’d his Cricket.

“I cannot in good conscience perform in a state where certain people are being denied their civil rights due to their sexual orientation,” said Adams in a statement on his website.

His “conscience” is bothered by North Carolina’s law, which is obvious he didn’t even read. This is par for the course for most people who rage against the law, but Adams is special, because his conscience seems to begin and end with North Carolina’s laws, and is nowhere to be found when it comes to places where they jail and kill gays.

Apparently, if Adams can’t get a spotlight off of refusing to play somewhere, he just doesn’t refuse to play there. It’s just like when he played Egypt, who jails homosexuals, just last month.

By the by, Adams runs under the Universal label, which also does business in the Middle East. Is Adams going to drop them now?

Jimmy Buffett

“…as for the future of shows in North Carolina, it would definitely depend on whether that stupid law is repealed.” said Buffett on his Margaritaville Blog.

Like Adams and Springsteen, the aging patriarch of the parrotheads checked “no” on NoCo once – I assume – he saw it was getting the other two publicity.

But even Mr. Margaritaville seems to be behind the times. Sean Davis at the Federalist uncovered a discrepancy.

“To see whether Buffett allows restaurants that license the use of his name to “let stupidity or bigotry” determine their own bathroom policies, The Federalist contacted several restaurants that are part of the Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville restaurant chain, including every Margaritaville restaurant in Buffett’s home state of Florida. Although Buffett criticized North Carolina’s bathroom law, multiple Margaritaville restaurants also require patrons to use the bathrooms that correspond to their biological sex.”

Davis went on to interview employees of Buffett’s Margaritaville chain, but the takeaway is that if asked to stop a man from entering a woman’s restroom, the employees would “absolutely” do it.

As it stands, Buffett’s words are about as weak as his restaurant’s margaritas.

All in all, the outrage around North Carolina is awfully selective, and hypocritical, even without business factors.

They’ll raise media hell over men not being able to enter women’s bathrooms at their leisure, but seem to be completely silent when it comes to the rights of others. I didn’t hear a peep out of them when Memories Pizza, and its owners, were being relentlessly hounded with threats of violence when they said their religious beliefs would prohibit them from catering a gay wedding. Not denying service to gays in their restaurant, mind you, but catering a gay wedding.

The outrage brigade is allowed to follow their conscience and refuse to perform, or do business, which is their right. But when it comes to others practicing their conscience, it’s suddenly Hitler come again.

The media, and advocates praise one side for boycotting entire states over a law they don’t remotely understand, yet completely trash and endanger the other group for acting on reasons and rights they understand wholly.

Sorry, but all this moral grandstanding and virtue signaling is the epitome of hypocrisy, and until these celebrities and corporations really put their money where their mouth is, they won’t be taken seriously.
