As we are still in the throes of the celebration of this nation’s 250th anniversary, we continue to see those afflicted with TDS who bristle at any mere nod towards our nation’s history. Honoring the military promotes our aggressive imperialism. The passionate jingoism elides our dark past. Excessive fireworks affected the environment. Air Force flyovers evoke the apocalypse. And the obsession for weeks over the Reflecting Pool was simply sophomoric. You get the drift.

Continuing with this national denigration theme, we have the latest issue to get the press worked up. President Trump has been heard saying how the media are the “enemy of the people”. We are seeing they are also hostile towards history. The new outrage apparently is that Trump is honoring our nation's founding via artwork, which has the press worked up. It is a devious plot to honor our past with aggressive statuary.
This week, the president had a new statue installed in the White House Rose Garden, and it is supreme. It depicts Thomas Jefferson seated, with his traveling desk, writing a draft of the Declaration of Independence. It is a striking piece.

No wait, my apologies: This is an aggressive and nefarious representation that reveals the totalitarian desires of our leader!
How is this the case? Well, the answer happens to be…who the hell knows?! All we can detail for you is that the press is deeply bothered by the effort. The Jefferson statue is the 5th artwork brought to the White House, following statues of George Washington (inventor of the dollar bill), Ben Franklin (inventor of electricity), Alexander Hamilton (for Broadway success), and the Revolutionary Minutemen (for making warfare cool).
The Intelligencer describes the collection of statues as “clutter.” At the Daily Beast (where they previously declared a Christopher Columbus statue erected on the property as “controversial”), it described the installation of the Jefferson honor as a “secret new addition.” They frame this as a dark move by Trump to hide...something, despite news reports a month earlier about the artwork, and the White House previously announcing it would be bringing in such displays. They were so stealth about it they gave the NY Times full access for coverage of the unveiling.
But the real news about this historical display is the nefarious nature of it all! It turns out that this Jefferson installation is a continuation of President Trump’s megalomaniacal desires, or something like that. According to an art “expert” dredged up by the Washington Post, this is a dire presentation seen in the seat of our leadership.
Some art critics argue that Trump’s emphasis on memorializing specific people, rather than commissioning abstract works that evoke broader themes and feelings, is a lost opportunity. “All told, the statues dating to his second term are of negligible artistic value,” Maxwell Anderson, the former president of the Association of Art Museum Directors, wrote in an email. Anderson also drew comparisons between Trump’s preferences and what he said were similar practices by dictators who led North Korea and the Soviet Union.
Trump’s “preferences” in honoring the men who crafted this country lack artistry, and also prove he wants to be a dictator. Uh huh.
“President Trump’s embrace of an official classicizing style in art and architecture finds its closest equivalent in authoritarian regimes,” Anderson wrote.
You cannot fix someone like Anderson. Saying he would prefer a display at the White House of a wad of melted Skittles glopped onto broken pottery with a road flare jabbed in the center, that caters to the feelings of a broader audience is his hot take. Suggesting that simple honors to historical figures are totalitarian is a mental condition he harbors.
The Washington Post entertaining this thought is the problem. Giving this mentality an audience lends legitimacy to the legitimate concept, while at the same time having the ability to sidestep responsibility. THEY did not say this is proof of Trump being a tyrant; this art critic did…who was given full exposure while it broadcast his opinion as valid and unchallenged.
