This week's news cycle was of course dominated by all of the fallout from the Iranian bombing mission and the desperate desire in the press to castigate, carp, and complain about Trump enacting this raid. That said, since the opposition to this successful mission was so uniformly spread out, there were other items in the news for outlets to distinguish themselves. But really, it was all done out of futility.
That is because we had a clear winner determined early on and it was no contest throughout the intervening days. That said, however, there was no shortage of outlets attempting to earn notice for fractured reporting. It was a rush of newsmakers looking for notoriety, so let’s tug on the hip waders and begin trudging through the swamp that is our media complex and determine who took top (bottom) honors this week.
THE CONTENDERS
The Atlantic – After he boldly declared Trump would never move on Iran, mere hours before Trump moved on Iran, David Frum scrambled next to say he was displeased with Trump’s action. The outlet helpfully gave us its harsh critique of sandwich wraps making a return and why they are just the worst. In a non-brilliant analysis on the anniversary of the release of “Jaws,” we are told the film represents the class conflicts seen in this country – in 2016 and the rise of Trump populism…four decades earlier.
The Bulwark – Sam Stein was caught flat-footed by stating Trump was never going to go into Iran. Tim Miller resorted to vulgar racism in order to…defend against the racism of deportations??? In a completely bizarre feature the site says it is wildly unlawful for the Supreme Court to override the lower court decisions…??? Bill Kristol begs to be ignored by saying he is now anti-anti-Zohan Mamdani.
Washington Post – While all outlets agree Iran was enriching uranium, WaPo claimed the US intel community said there was no intent to build nuclear weapons. One of their Pulitzer-winning editors was nabbed for child pornography charges. They raved about the fact that for the first time, a trans lawyer tried a case before the Supreme Court.
CBS News – Margaret Brennan was once again schooled by Marco Rubio as she is now going for her master's degree in incompetent interviewing. At Florida A&M University they reported on a “groundswell” of opposition to the election of a new president over DEI issues – and showed all of eight protesters in this groundswell. The network complained that the USPS will have its costly failed EV fleet conversion halted. The “60 Minutes” anchors are demanding they pick their new boss, or there will be a revolt.
THE WINNER
CNN
Pretty much by Monday the network was already the clear leader going into the clubhouse, and it never looked back nor was challenged.
Natasha Bertrand drew most of the attention with her deeply flawed and entirely spoon-fed report on the internal Pentagon memo that claimed the Iran mission was a bust.
The blowback was enough that CNN was compelled to come out with a statement lending its complete support to her reporting.
Later, the network was found to have been altering the early reports when challenged by Newsbusters on their claims.
Brian Stelter was baffled why a classified mission with stealth bombers did not have video clips for the press. Later he attempted to defend CNN’s reporting on the failure of the mission by declaring that they do not have all the facts. (Brian, maybe stop “helping.”)
Kaitlan Collins completely dismissed the White House announcing a ceasefire and was cut off in mid-sentence by Anderson Cooper announcing that it was just confirmed.
Erin Burnett laughably told us that although they chant “Death to America!”, the Iranians doing so are really friendly and swell people.
Immediately after the bombing CNN promised it would rock the oil markets and slam the economy; 2 days later CNN reported on plunging oil prices, and the stock market was inching higher towards record numbers.
Jake Tapper continued to rewrite the Biden history, this time with Chuck Todd as they declared the former president is not actually a swell family man… as most people have known for years now. Jake later defended CNN by declaring they rely on asking questions and stating facts - while at the same time he is selling his book about the press not asking questions and burying the facts. He spent minutes decrying claims that Iran’s program was deeply affected, only to have a guest come on immediately to say the opposite.
On a CNN panel, Cari Champion dismissed the claim that Trump brokered a peace deal between the Congo and Rwanda…after the deal had been signed in the Oval Office.
