After a multi-year legal battle stretching back to 2022, the Florida Supreme Court has finally ruled on its congressional map. In short, it's a total victory for Gov. Ron DeSantis, who was instrumental in pushing through the map, giving the Republican Party a 20-8 seat advantage.

It's likely the GOP would not have won the House in 2022 or 2024 without the redistricting that took place and has now been upheld.

We uphold our state’s congressional districting plan, because the federal Equal Protection Clause prohibits the racially gerrymandered district that the plaintiffs demand.

Nothing about this was easy from the very beginning. Multiple times, the Republican-led Florida legislature tried to punt on redistricting, allowing multiple Democrats to keep their seats. It wasn't until DeSantis vetoed the legislature's map and told them to pass his or pound sand that something finally happened.

Unfortunately, many of those same Republicans would later try to pass amnesty and strip the governor of his ability to enforce federal immigration law in what was sure seemed like retaliation. DeSantis defeated that gambit as well, but it's a cautionary tale of how far Florida still has to go, and how precarious things could get once the current governor leaves office.

Regardless, what this lawsuit centered on was an obviously gerrymandered district that covered some 200 miles from Tallahassee to Jacksonville. It was originally drawn to lump together the multiple black populations in order to guarantee a Democrat victory. Usually, those kinds of districts are left alone by Republicans because they fear running afoul of the Voting Rights Act. DeSantis turned that on its head, though, and actually argued that it was the Democrat district that violated the law.

In the end, the Florida Supreme Court agreed, putting the issue to bed and cementing GOP gains going into a crucial election year. DeSantis continues to show how effective conservative governance can be. It's just a shame some in his own party continue to try to sabotage that.
